
The highest point in Pocahontas County, West Virginia is Thorny Flat on Cheat Mountain. It has an elevation of 4,848 feet (1,478 m). It is the second highest peak in the state of West Virginia, after Spruce Knob.
Cheat Mountain is a long, rugged ridge that stretches for about 50 miles (80 km) from the north to the south of Pocahontas County. It is part of the Allegheny Mountains, which are the easternmost mountains of the Appalachian Mountains.
Thorny Flat is located in the northwestern part of Pocahontas County. It is accessible by a hiking trail that starts near the town of Marlinton. The hike to the top of Thorny Flat is about 3 miles (5 km) long and gains about 1,500 feet (457 m) in elevation.
The views from the top of Thorny Flat are spectacular. On a clear day, you can see for miles in all directions. In the distance, you can see the peaks of the Allegheny Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains.
