A singular and unaccountable occurrence took place at the house of George Lewis,

A singular and unaccountable occurrence took place at the house of George Lewis, who lives about a mile from here, on the nights of Monday and Tuesday, the 27th and 28th ultimo. Monday night, about 9 o'clock, while Mr. Lewis and his family and two neighbors (Alvin Burr and C. A. Rodgers) were talking around the fireside, a strange and fearful-looking something, with enormous claws, teeth and eyes, and demoniacal expression of face, appeared at one of the windows.

The men, much excited, and catching up anything they could find to defend themselves with, rushed to the door to make away with the hideous visitor, but to their great astonishment found nothing. They couldn't see or hear anything--not a trace of a track could be found--and very strange to say Mr. Lewis's dogs, which are very fierce and noisy, made no outward demonstration whatever.

Mr. Lewis was considerably stirred up over the strange visitation and requested Mr. Burr and Mr. Rodgers to be present on the night following, which they did, and the same mysterious appearance was seen at the same window, but no sooner had it made its appearance than it disappeared as suddenly as it came.

The men were so frightened that they left the house and spent the remainder of the night at a neighbor's.

On Wednesday morning a number of persons visited the house and examined the premises carefully, but could find no trace of anything unusual.

The occurrence has created a great deal of excitement in the neighborhood, and many strange and wonderful stories are afloat in regard to it.

Some think it was a ghost, others a wildcat, and still others a large owl.

Whatever it was, it certainly created a great deal of terror among those who saw it.

The text is from a newspaper article that was published in the Ronceverte Register on March 10, 1883. The article is about a strange and unaccountable occurrence that took place at the house of George Lewis in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. The article describes the appearance of the mysterious creature, which was seen by several people, and the investigation that was conducted to try to determine what it was. The article also mentions the different theories that have been proposed about the creature's identity.
