In the 1861 secession convention, Pocahontas County voted overwhelmingly to secede from the Union. Of the 705 votes cast, 690 votes were in favor of secession and only 15 votes were opposed.
Pocahontas County was also the site of several battles during the war. The most significant of these was the Battle of Droop Mountain, which was fought on November 6, 1863. In this battle, Union General William Averell defeated a Confederate force led by General John Echols.
After the war, Pocahontas County was readmitted to the Union in 1870. However, many of its citizens remained loyal to the Confederacy and were disfranchised for several years.
