Governor Punishes Legislators

Governor Punishes Legislators

We got it going and coming. Like the man who said that he had never tasted the wing of a chicken, because when he was young the old folks got the best cut, and now the young ones get it.

The Governor is an old time school teacher. He was teaching in Marion county at the time that I was straining every nerve to keep a set of young ones interested and amused for four long weary winter months, in this county, trying to make a hundred dollars in cash money to see me through the year.

It therefore was natural for the Governor to adopt the appropriate punishment for a legislature that would not do its work, and when he found that the statesmen had not done their duty and provided money to support the office holders of the State in the manner to which they had been accustomed, he kept the whole school in for ten days.

That time went by and the boys continued sullen and disobedient. So he kept them in ten days longer. And that time rolled away. And he added more than a month to the sentence, or until June 30th, unless excused sooner for good conduct.

And the sad part of it is that the legislators are paid by the year and they get nothing for overtime. Under the former law, when a session was extended, a censorious public invariably accused the representatives of stealing the hinget more.

But now the Governor has taken the matter into his own hands and has shown them how to do their work without being paid for it.
