House Destroyed by Fire in Pocahontas

Ligoo's fine residence, situated at Clover Lick, was entirely destroyed by fire on the night of the 12th, with nearly all of its valuable contents. The members of the family had been boiling apple-butter in an adjoining building, and it is supposed that after the family retired for the night it caught from some sparks and set the main dwelling on fire. The first intimation they had was being aroused by the crackling of the flames. The building was a very large and commodious one, and had only recently been completed. We have enjoyed the doctor's hospitality and have often examined the rare old steel engravings, some of them nearly 100 years old, which adorned the walls of his parlor, and other valuable articles of virtu. The house which were consumed with the building must certainly be a serious loss to the doctor.

Notes:

  • The article was published in the Wheeling Register on October 13, 1884.
  • The house belonged to Dr. John Ligoo, a physician in Pocahontas County, West Virginia.
  • The fire was believed to have been started by sparks from the adjoining building where the family was boiling apple-butter.
  • The fire destroyed the house and all of its contents, including the doctor's collection of rare old steel engravings.
