Why Johnnie Can't Go to College!

 why Johnnie can't read

Johnnie has high aspirations--a scholarship to a great university, a nice job with a livable salary, perhaps a nice job at a research facility.

Johnnie's folks don't have much income. He has to have a good job to improve his lot-in-life.  College just might be his opportunity to make something of himself.

Johnnie is a freshman at Pocahontas County High School.  He has made great progress in Marlinton Middle School; he loves math and science. He wants to be an electronics engineer.

Physically, he survived the COVID epidemic.  The government generously provided tens of thousands of funds.  The school system hired some new people to help out and used the funds to assist with the burden of COVID.  The plague has passed and the government has cut off those funds! No more COVID--no more money!  But the school system would love to keep some of those expenses going.

They hate to lay-off teachers.  But somebody has got to go--they want to cut a business teacher, a math teacher, a science teacher, and maybe even a history teacher--all of which Johnnie needs to get into a college. They even want to cut some college prep classes.

Maybe John should try to get a job as a sanitation engineer, instead!  After all, there will always be floors to be mopped and commodes to be cleaned! That's an honorable work but it doesn't pay as well as an electronics engineer.

Maybe "shooting for the stars" wasn't such a practical idea!
