- Archaeologists believe they may have discovered the final location of Noah’s Ark on Turkey’s Mount Ararat.
- Soil samples from atop the highest peaks in Turkey reveal human activity and marine materials.
- Dating of the rock and soil from the location match with Biblical timing of Noah’s Ark.
Researchers from a trio of universities in Turkey and the United States have spent roughly a year analyzing the rock and soil in the famous Durupinar formation on Mount Ararat, the highest mountain in Turkey. They believe that the boat-shaped site may hold the ruins of the legendary Noah’s Ark.
The Biblical account of Noah tells of God instructing Noah to build a giant ark to spare his family and pairs of animals from an impending flood meant to destroy the evil and wickedness running rampant on Earth. Noah’s Ark is said to have come to rest on the mountains of Ararat following a 150-day flood about 5,000 years ago.
Researchers now believe they’ve found evidence of human activity near the boat-shaped formation in the mountains from between 5500 and 3000 BC.

Genesis 6:9-22
King James Version
9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.
10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.
12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.
15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.
16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.
17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.
18 But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee.
19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.
20 Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.
21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.
22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.
Genesis 7
King James Version
7 And the Lord said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.
2 Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.
3 Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.
4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.
5 And Noah did according unto all that the Lord commanded him.
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
13 In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;
14 They, and every beast after his kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort.
15 And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life.
16 And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the Lord shut him in.
17 And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.
18 And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.
19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.
20 Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.
21 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man:
22 All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.
23 And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.
24 And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.
8 And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters assuaged;
2 The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained;
3 And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated.
4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.
5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen.
6 And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made:
7 And he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth.
8 Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground;
9 But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark.
10 And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark;
11 And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.
12 And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the dove; which returned not again unto him any more.
13 And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off the earth: and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the ground was dry.
14 And in the second month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, was the earth dried.
15 And God spake unto Noah, saying,
16 Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons' wives with thee.
17 Bring forth with thee every living thing that is with thee, of all flesh, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth; that they may breed abundantly in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply upon the earth.
18 And Noah went forth, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him:
19 Every beast, every creeping thing, and every fowl, and whatsoever creepeth upon the earth, after their kinds, went forth out of the ark.
20 And Noah builded an altar unto the Lord; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
21 And the Lord smelled a sweet savour; and the Lord said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.
22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;
1. Noah is a 10th generation descendant of Adam.
While Cain and Able are probably Adam and Eve’s most famous (or infamous) kids, it’s no surprise that the couple instructed by God to “be fruitful and multiply” (Gen 1:28) went on to have more children. One of these—and the only other child of Adam and Eve mentioned in the Bible by name—was Seth. In a passage of Scripture often referred to as the “Generations of Adam,” Noah is listed among the tenth generation to be born from Adam and Eve, descendants of Seth.
2. Life for Noah got pretty interesting after his 500th birthday.
Shortly after turning 500, Noah became a father. While he was raising his family, God told him to build the ark. Shortly after turning 600 Noah, along with his wife, sons, and daughters-in-law, entered the Ark as God literally opened the floodgates.
By the way, before the flood, people appear to have lived a very long time—many hundreds of years. In fact, Noah’s grandfather Methuselah, who died in the same year as the flood, is the oldest man mentioned in the Bible at 969 years old!
Granted, Noah’s life in his 600’s was pretty interesting, too, since that’s when he and his family spent about a year on the Ark then disembarked to a fresh new world. But we still think that raising three boys while single-handedly building a boat a third the size of the Titanic made for a memorable century in the life of Noah.
And speaking of the Titanic…
3. Noah’s Ark was a third of the size of the Titanic.
The Bible records the measurements of the ark in cubits. At 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high, the volume of the ark is estimated at about 1.5 million cubic feet, which is about a third of the volume of the Titanic. (By the way, bet you didn’t know that a cubit is not an exact measurement, but instead is the distance from a man’s elbow to the tip of his middle finger, typically between 18 and 21 inches).
Some people argue that there’s no way Noah’s Ark could have held two of every kind of animal, but the numbers suggest otherwise. According to ark measurements, the big boat had about as much space as 250 railroad stock cars, which some folks have calculated can hold between 20,000 and 40,000 animals roughly the size of sheep.
4. Arphaxad was the first post-flood baby.
At least he’s the first post-flood baby mentioned in the Bible. According to Genesis 11:10, Arphaxad, the son of Noah’s son Shem, was born two years after the flood.
5. Nearly 300 cultures agree there was a catastrophic flood.
According to scientist Dr. Duane Gish, there are more than 270 stories about a catastrophic flood from cultures around the world. Most of these stories bear similarities to the biblical story of Noah and the ark.
Eight humans survived the flood and provided eye-witness accounts to future generations. So how did there come to be so many similar versions of the biblical account of the flood? It makes sense when you consider that in addition to the passage of time, language was confounded during the building of the Tower of Babel a couple hundred years after the Great Flood. These two factors undoubtedly contributed to the development of variants of the story.
6. The Bible tells us where Noah’s Ark landed. Sort of.
According the Genesis 8:4, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat, a mountain range in Turkey. Many expeditions have searched for the ark on Mount Ararat itself, while other expeditions have focused on nearby mountains in Iran.
References to sightings of an ark in that region of the world go way back. In fact, his book, The Travels of Marco Polo, Marco Polo wrote: “In the heart of the Armenian mountain range, the mountain’s peak is shaped like a cube (or cup), on which Noah’s Ark is said to have rested, whence it is called the Mountain of Noah’s Ark. It [the mountain] is so broad and long that it takes more than two days to go around it. On the summit the snow lies so deep all the year round that no one can ever climb it; this snow never entirely melts, but new snow is for ever falling on the old, so that the level rises.”
Bob Cornuke, president of the Bible Archaeology Search and Exploration (BASE) Institute, cites Scriptures that support idea of the Ark settling in the nearby Elborz Mountains, which stretch from the borders of Armenia to Afghanistan. In fact, during an expedition there in 2007 Cornuke and his team discovered an unusual rock formation in the side of a hill, 14000 above sea level, that has the appearance of fossilized wooden beams. The formation is about 400 feet long, which fits the size of the Ark as described in the Bible. In addition, Cornuke’s team discovered sea life around the object—including thousands of clams—which suggests that the object was once in the ocean.
7. People who have searched for Noah’s Ark include historians, an astronaut, and a former SWAT team member.
Expeditions to find Noah’s Ark have been underway since times of antiquity and have included people from many professions and walks of life.
For example, did you know that former American astronaut, James Irwin—the eighth man to walk on the moon—led two expeditions to find the ark in the 1980s? During the 1982 expedition, Irwin was badly injured by falling rocks and was carried to safety on a donkey.Cornuke, mentioned above, is a former SWAT team member and police investigator.
People who claim to have seen the Ark firsthand include an army sergeant based in Iran during WWII, and Armenian Georgie Hagopian who claims to have visited the Ark as a child on two occasions with his uncle.
Whether the mysteries of Noah’s Ark are fully revealed to us this side of heaven, the story will undoubtedly continue to capture our imaginations and attention as the search for remnants of the historic ship continue.

ake a look at some of the most interesting facts concerning Noah and the ark he built.
God flooded the Earth because of human wickedness after the Sons of God (descendants of Seth) “saw that the daughters of man (descendants of Cain) were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose.” According to ancient sources like Enoch, the children born of these relations were Nephilim.
The Nephilim, sometimes referred to as giants, “were the heroes of old, men of renown.” Bonus fact: Goliath was a Nephilim.
We don’t know for sure if the Nephilim are the ones to blame for The Flood. Some experts believe their mentioning in Genesis before The Flood is reason enough for God to wipe the human race off the Earth.
God chose Noah because he could build ships. He sinned like the other humans, but he was “a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time.” This could mean that if Noah lived in a different time period, he would have been judged more harshly for his actions.
Methuselah, the oldest person in the Bible at 969 years old, is Noah’s grandpa.
We don’t know his mother’s name, but Noah’s dad was Lamech.
Noah is the 10th-generation descendant of Adam.
He was a farmer.
We don’t know Noah’s wife’s name. She’s only mentioned as Noah’s wife in the Bible.
Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. He was 500 years old when he had his three sons.
The Ark’s wood is a mystery. The King James Version of the Bible says the Ark was made from “gopher wood,” but trees with that name do not exist today. Scholars say scribes may have copied the wrong word. Instead, in the NIV version, the Ark used “cypress wood,” which was commonly used by the Phoenicians when they built ships.
The Ark is measured in cubits, which comes from the Latin word “cubitum,” or elbow. The length of a cubit is measured from a man’s elbow and the tip of his middle finger.
The Ark is 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. Since a cubit is about 1.5 feet, the Ark was about 450 ft by 75 ft by 45 ft or close to 1.5 million cubic feet. That could fit about 1,300 of the standard 20-foot shipping containers you see on cargo ships.
The cubit is not a standard measurement. It ranges between 15 and 22 inches, so the exact dimensions of the Ark could vary.
The Titanic was about three times bigger than the Ark, with a volume of 4.6 million cubic feet.
The ratio of the Ark, 30:5:3, was still used for shipbuilding until the 1900s.
It took over 100 years to build the Ark. At the time the Ark went off on its journey, Noah was 600 years old.
There were two of each animal on the Ark – or were there? In another passage of the Bible, God told Noah to take “seven pairs of every kind of clean animal, one pair of every kind of unclean animal, and seven pairs of every kind of bird.” This could mean there were 14 of each clean animal on the Ark.
We don’t know exactly how many animals were on the Ark. One expert says the Ark could have held at least 2.15 million sheep. But there had to be room for sleeping and eating, leading one expert to say there were only 16,000 animals on the Ark.
The Ark had three stories and a roof with a small opening below it – but no steering wheel. It was made to float, and God steered the ship at will.
Rain and “floodgates of the heavens were opened” for forty days and forty nights. According to the Bible, the water was 15 cubits high, or about 23 feet.
The floodwaters stayed for 150 days, and then they receded for another 100 days. That’s when Noah sent out his dove, and it came back with an olive branch.
Noah and his family (wife, sons, and sons’ wives) were stuck on the Ark for one year and ten days.
After coming off the Ark, God showed a rainbow as a sign of his covenant (promise) for all mankind that he would never flood the Earth like that again.
God told Noah not to eat “meat that has its lifeblood still in it.”
Noah was the first drunk. He created the first vineyard in the history of mankind; then, he drank his invention until he fell asleep naked in his tent.
His son, Ham, found him drunk and naked in his tent but did nothing other than tell his brothers, Shem and Japheth. When Shem & Japheth arrived, they walked backward into Noah’s tent to avoid seeing his nakedness and covered his body with a garment.
Because Ham didn’t help Noah, Noah cursed Ham’s son Canaan to become a slave to Shem and Japheth. Noah then blessed Shem & Japheth for their actions. This also explains the fight between the Canaanites (descendants of Ham and Canaan) and the Semites (descendants of Shem).
Noah lived to be 950 years old, 350 years after the Flood.
According to Josephus, the Tower of Babel was waterproofed with bitumen in reaction to the Flood to protect themselves from another flood.
No one knows where the Ark is currently located. After it rested on Mount Ararat, many expeditions have tried to find it, but there has been no hard evidence yet.
Marco Polo was one of the discoverers who found the Ark after a three-day hike in the snow.
