• Asbestos fibers: This mineral was commonly used in building materials for its fire resistance and insulation properties. However, inhaling tiny asbestos fibers, released through damage or wear, can cause severe health problems.
• Long-term health risks: Asbestos exposure can lead to serious illnesses like mesothelioma (a cancer of the lung lining) and lung cancer. These diseases may take decades to develop after the initial exposure.

Asbestos in Motels:

• Pre-ban construction: Motels built before the 1980s, when asbestos use was restricted, are more likely to contain asbestos-containing materials (ACMs).
• Common ACMs in motels: ACMs could be found in ceiling and floor tiles, wall texture, insulation around boilers and pipes, and fireproofing materials.

Motel Exposure Risks:

• Disturbed ACMs: Activities like renovations, drilling, or crumbly materials can release asbestos fibers.
• Risk for guests and workers: Both guests and maintenance workers could be exposed to asbestos if ACMs are disturbed.

What you can do:

• Motels are not required to test for asbestos unless undergoing renovation. There's no way for guests to definitively know if a motel contains asbestos.
• Be aware of potential ACMs: If you see damaged ceiling or floor tiles, crumbling textures, or suspect asbestos-based insulation, avoid disturbing them and report it to the management.
• Prioritize well-maintained motels: Opt for motels that appear well-maintained, which might indicate a lower risk of encountering disturbed ACMs.
