• The land now known as Snowshoe was primarily used for logging from the early 1900s until around 1960. After extensive logging activity, the area became largely abandoned and barren.

1970s:

• 1974: Enter Dr. Thomas "Doc" Brigham, a dentist from North Carolina who had previously developed successful ski resorts in his home state. Recognizing the potential of the mountainous terrain, Brigham purchased the land and began construction of Snowshoe Mountain as a new ski resort.
• December 13, 1974: Snowshoe Mountain officially opens to the public with the Cupp Run Slope offering skiers a vertical drop of over 1500 feet. The initial facilities were modest, with only a few buildings like the Shaver's Center, a pump house, and employee dorms.
• Trail names reflect logging history: Early ski trails and lifts were named after elements of the region's logging past, such as Grab Hammer, J-Hook, Ball Hooter, and Skidder, paying homage to the area's heritage.

1980s & 1990s:

• Financial struggles: Despite Brigham's optimism, Snowshoe faced financial difficulties in its initial years. The first decade was marked by challenges in establishing the resort and attracting visitors.
• 1990: Japanese investment: A significant turning point came in 1990 when Tokyo Tower Development Company Limited acquired Snowshoe. This investment provided the resources needed for further development and expansion.
• 1992: Expansion: Snowshoe purchased the nearby Silver Creek ski area, adding to its terrain and offerings.
