A song prompt

A song prompt is a starting point to spark your creativity and get you writing a song. Here's how to write one for yourself:

1. Choose a starting point:

  • Theme or emotion: Pick a feeling you want to capture, like love, loss, hope, anger, or nostalgia.
  • Character or situation: Create a character or scenario for your song. Maybe it's a robot falling in love, a forgotten toy in an attic, or a road trip across the country.
  • Object or setting: Focus on a specific object or place that inspires you. Write a song about a worn-out pair of sneakers, a bustling city street corner, or a dusty record player.
  • Genre twist: Take a familiar theme and put a new spin on it. Write a love song from the villain's perspective, a break-up anthem with a positive outlook, or a lullaby about monsters.

2. Add layers:

  • Sensory details: Use vivid descriptions to bring your prompt to life. Mention the sound of rain on a window pane, the smell of freshly cut grass, or the warmth of sunlight on your skin.
  • Questions or challenges: Pose a question or challenge within your prompt to guide your lyrics. "Will they ever find their way back home?" "Can love survive the test of time?"
  • Figurative Language: Incorporate metaphors, similes, or personification to add depth and intrigue.

3. Keep it focused:

While prompts can be open-ended, try to avoid being too broad. Instead of "write a song about love," refine it to "write a song about a love letter hidden for decades."

Here are some examples to get you started:

  • A lonely lighthouse keeper longing for connection. (Character, Setting)
  • A bittersweet melody about a childhood home being sold. (Theme, Setting)
  • A robot programmed for efficiency discovers the beauty of imperfection. (Character, Theme)
  • A lullaby sung from the perspective of the moon. (Object, Genre Twist)

Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and use the prompt as a springboard for your creativity.
