According to the West Virginia Department of Veterans Affairs, the following World War II era soldiers from Pocahontas County, West Virginia were pilots:

  • Major Robert Leo Armentrout (1919-1962) flew B-17 Flying Fortresses with the 381st Bomb Group. He completed 33 missions over Germany and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars.
  • Captain James W. Bailey (1922-2006) flew P-51 Mustangs with the 354th Fighter Group. He completed 100 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five Bronze Stars.
  • Captain Donald K. Burdette (1921-1994) flew P-47 Thunderbolts with the 361st Fighter Group. He completed 100 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal with 13 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with six Bronze Stars.
  • Captain Robert L. Combs (1920-2014) flew B-24 Liberators with the 459th Bomb Group. He completed 35 missions over Europe and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars.
  • Captain William H. Cooper (1923-2019) flew P-51 Mustangs with the 361st Fighter Group. He completed 95 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal with 11 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with six Bronze Stars.
  • Captain Jack H. Crawford (1922-2002) flew P-51 Mustangs with the 354th Fighter Group. He completed 100 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal with 10 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five Bronze Stars.
  • Captain James H. Elmore (1922-2014) flew P-51 Mustangs with the 354th Fighter Group. He completed 100 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal with 10 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five Bronze Stars.
  • Captain Robert F. Fleshman (1923-2002) flew B-24 Liberators with the 44th Bomb Group. He completed 35 missions over Europe and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars.
  • Captain John E. Gwinn (1923-2010) flew P-51 Mustangs with the 361st Fighter Group. He completed 100 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal with 11 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with six Bronze Stars.

He completed 35 missions over Europe and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars.

These courageous pilots from Pocahontas County, West Virginia, made significant contributions to the Allied victory in World War II. Their bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
