The only natural lake in West Virginia is Trout Pond, located in Hardy County. It is a small, two-acre lake that was formed by a sinkhole that filled with water from a series of mountain streams. Trout Pond is home to native brook trout and is a popular destination for fishing, swimming, and camping.
Trout Pond is unique because it is situated in an area of limestone that is slowly dissolving away. This has caused the pond to shrink in size over time, and it is possible that it will eventually disappear altogether. However, Trout Pond is still a beautiful and valuable natural resource, and it is worth visiting while it is still here.
Trout Pond is part of the Trout Pond Recreation Area, which also includes Rock Cliff Lake, a man-made lake that is much larger than Trout Pond. The recreation area offers a variety of activities for visitors, including camping, fishing, swimming, hiking, and picnicking.
