Caves of Pocahontas County

Caves of Pocahontas County

These are all well known caves in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Here is some additional information on each:

  • Saltpeter Cave: This cave was mined for saltpeter, a key ingredient in gunpowder, during the Civil War. The cave is now a popular spot for spelunking (cave exploring).
  •
  • Overholt Blowing Cave: This cave is named for the blowing sound that the wind makes as it enters the cave entrance. The cave is home to a variety of bats and other wildlife.
  •
  • Sneadeger Cave: This cave is located near the Greenbrier County line. The cave is known for its large rooms and beautiful formations. Sneadeger Cave is on private property and closed to the public.

Known caverns in Pocahontas County are, Saltpeter Cave at the head of Swago Creek, Overholt Blowing Cave near McClintock's mill, and Sneadeger Cave west of Droop Mountain near the Greenbrier County line.

There is also a cave near the base of Greenbrier Limestone at the head of Stevens Hole Run. This cave was the home of Steven Sewell for several years and is now a point of interest for tourists. The entire drainages of Hills Creek and Bruffey Creek descend into a large sink to pass through an underground channel beneath Droop Mountain.

The document also mentions McClintock Cave on McClintock Run.
However, it is unclear if this is a cave or some other geological formation.
