Huntersville Chert is used as a road-surfacing material.
The chert is found in loose deposits along the outcrop of the Huntersville Chert member. The chert fragments can be readily handled by steam shovels and, when spread upon the road, scraping to keep the surface smooth is the only treatment necessary.
Finer particles of clay, sand, iron, and lime form an excellent binder under the weight of traffic. The Huntersville Chert has been used extensively for road building in Pocahontas County, especially on State routes 42 and 43 between Marlinton and Green Bank.
The weathered talus from the Huntersville Chert contains enough iron, lime, sand, and alumina to bind well, making it excellent for road material.
A sample of the chert from State routes 42 and 43 was tested and found to be suitable for use as a road-surfacing material.
