Governor Howard M. Gore has shown great interest in the Droop Mountain battlefield

His involvement made it possible for the state of West Virginia to
acquire a portion of the battlefield and establish the Droop Mountain
Battlefield State Park. The dedication of the park was received by Governor Gore on behalf of the people of West Virginia.
The Battle of Droop Mountain took place on November 6, 1863, during the American Civil War. It occurred in Pocahontas County, West Virginia.
The battle involved a Union brigade commanded by Brigadier General
William W. Averell and a smaller Confederate force commanded by
Brigadier General John Echols and Colonel William L. "Mudwall" Jackson. The Union forces were successful in driving the Confederates from their breastworks on Droop Mountain.
