Teaching tenth graders about reflexive pronouns

Reflexive Pronouns and Subjects | No Nonsense Grammar | PBS LearningMedia

Objective:

  • Students will be able to identify and correctly use reflexive pronouns in sentences.

Materials:

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handouts with examples of reflexive pronouns
  • Worksheets with exercises on reflexive pronouns

Introduction:

  • Write the words "reflexive pronouns" on the board and explain to the students that they will be learning about this part of speech.
  • Ask students if they know what reflexive pronouns are and if they can give any examples.

Teaching:

  • Introduce reflexive pronouns in context by giving each student a piece of paper and challenging them to draw something (a dog, an airplane, etc). Give them 5 minutes or so to draw their picture and at the same time, draw a picture yourself.
  • Next, give students lots of examples of reflexive pronouns being used. Choose one of the male students and have them hold up their drawing. Then say, “Chris drew it himself.” and have the class repeat after you. Then, have a female student hold up their drawing and say, “Kelly drew it herself.”
  • Explain the concept of reflexive pronouns and provide examples. For example, "I saw myself in the mirror" or "She hurt herself while playing basketball."
  • Provide handouts with examples of reflexive pronouns and go through them with the class.
  • Have students practice using reflexive pronouns in sentences by completing worksheets with exercises on reflexive pronouns.

Assessment:

  • To assess students' understanding of reflexive pronouns, have them complete a quiz or worksheet with sentences that require the use of reflexive pronouns.
  • Alternatively, have students write a short paragraph using reflexive pronouns to demonstrate their understanding of the concept.

Conclusion:

  • Review the key concepts of reflexive pronouns and provide additional examples if necessary.
  • Encourage students to continue practicing using reflexive pronouns in their writing and speech.
