The Dean family has a long and rich history in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. The first Deans to arrive in the county were Alfred George Dean, Sr. and his wife, Ina Smith Dean. They settled in the Marlinton area of the county in the late 1800s. Alfred George Dean, Sr. was a farmer and a merchant, and he also served as a justice of the peace. Ina Smith Dean was a homemaker and a midwife.
The Deans had a large family, and their descendants quickly spread throughout Pocahontas County. Many of the Deans became farmers, coal miners, and merchants. Some of them also served in the military.
One of the most notable Deans was Alfred George Dean, Jr. He was born in Marlinton, West Virginia, in 1934, and he became a park superintendent. He worked at Canaan Valley, Cacapon State Park, Valley Falls State Park, and Kumbrabow State Forest. Alfred George Dean, Jr. was a dedicated public servant, and he was a beloved member of the Pocahontas County community.
