John D. Sutton was a West Virginia private in the Union
Army who fought in the battle of Droop Mountain. He later led the
movement to create Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park while serving
in the West Virginia House of Delegates
.
Sutton was born in Flatwoods, West Virginia, in 1844, and was a member
of the first constitutional convention and served in the first West
Virginia legislature.
His father, John Sutton, purchased 7,000 acres of land in Braxton
County, West Virginia, and his son, John D. Sutton, explored the area in
1798 and discovered an abandoned settlement. In 1863, John D. Sutton served in the First West Virginia Legislature as a representative of Braxton County.
In 1986, there was a Democratic Primary election for the West Virginia
House of Delegates, and Ronald Rose, Roscoe F. Tucker, Thomas A. Knight,
Everett Bledsoe, James A. Wood, and John D. Sutton were among the
candidates for District 23.
