  Canadian and Olive Petition Lucy and it appeared to the satisfaction of the Court that the said Lucy is now above the age of thirty years against the form of the Statute in such case made and provided. It is therefore ordered that the said Lucy be registered and in the 1st declaration of the State.

  On the application of Isaac Littleton it is ordered that Charles Brown be appointed overseer of the road leading from the Court house by Jeremiah Austins to the end of his district, bounded on the North by William Hambleton and the South by Charles Journells, to which road the former overseer was appointed to keep the same road in repair.

  Ordered that the Sheriff of the County summon the following persons for the Court to sit as Jurors at the Court house on the 4th Monday in this present month to wit Isaac Littleton Senr. Thomas Bell Senr. James Auston & John Poor Senr.

  On the Petition & application of the Commissioners of the revenue it is order that the Sheriff of the County be authorized to levy on the personal property of the Securities of John Smith late Sherriff of this County for the balance due by him to the revenue.

  On the Petition & application of John Poor Senr. & Francis M. Watkins Exrs. &c. of Mary Poor decd. it is ordered that the Sheriff summons Samuel Austin with witnesses herein at which time the Court from some decree.

  Isaac Griggs is by the Court appointed overseer of the Publick highway in & for the ensuing year in the district formerly assigned to John Auston Senr. bounded by the mill and the end of the County, opposite to his house, which said Overseer of the Court is directed to keep in repair.

  Ordered that this Court be adjourned untill Court in Course

  It is ordered that the bonds of Charles Gwatkin as deputy Sheriff be recorded at the Court here Thursday the 5th day of June 1823.

  Present Justices Thornton, David Wright, W. Rogers Robert Thompson, Robert Hughes, Hugh Brent, John Glassell, & R. Tutt Gentleman. Thereupon the foregoing proceedings were duly signed.

  A deed from James Simpson & three Slaves therein named (to wit Harrison, Milly & Betsy) with a release of his right of reversion to the three Slaves in the County Court of Stafford was proved by the oath of Charles Griggs a subscribing witness thereto and thereupon is admitted to record.

  A deed from James Simpson & Betsy Thompson to Wm. Fitzhugh, Exor. of the last will & testament of Ann Thornton decd. was proved by the oaths of Walter Robinson James Simpson, Reuben Thornton, Wm. Thompson, Robert Hughes & Hugh Brent subscribing witnesses thereto & thereupon is admitted to record.

  A deed from Laughlin Mcintosh to William Fitzhugh, Exor. of the last will & testament of Ann Thornton decd. was proved by the oaths of Reuben Thornton, James Simpson, William Thompson, Robert Hughes & Hugh Brent subscribing witnesses thereto & admitted to record.

  A deed from James Gibson (of Fauquier) to William Fitzhugh Exor. of Ann Thornton deed. for seventy four Acres of Land was acknowledged by the said James Gibson & thereupon is admitted to record.

  William Jones (by Reuben Thornton his Atty.) filed here in Court his power of Attorney to the said Reuben Thornton & the same is admitted to record.

  David Brent Edmund Fitzwilliam & Charles Fitzwilliam Exors. of the last will & testament of William Fitzwilliam deed. exhibited here in Court their said will & the same was proven by the oaths of two of the subscribing witnesses thereto (to wit) William H. Hooe & Benjamin Dulany Junr. & thereupon is admitted to record together with the certificate of their oaths which is ordered to be recorded.

  Reuben Thornton Benjamin Fitzwilliam & Wm. Fitzwilliam Exors. of the last will & testament of William Fitzwilliam deed. exhibited here in Court an appraisement & Inventory of the personal Estate of their said testator which was received & is accordingly admitted to record.

  On the Petition of William Jones for a dedimus Potestatem to take the privy examination of his wife Sarah Jones was awarded him returnable here to Court. It is ordered that he take her privy examination according to Law & make return thereof to the Court. He made oath that he had not intermarried with his said wife since the date of said deed.

  from the house late in the tenure of the Court having formed it from the woods for which he has made no application to the Court for the timber cut thereon with interest from the 21st day of November 1818 till paid with costs and it is further ordered that the said Richard Scott be allowed to remain in the said house till the first day of January next on his entering into bond with security according to Law.

  On the Petition of John Gordon Constable it is ordered that an enquiry be made touching the sanity of John Gordon Son of John Gordon Senr. on Monday the 16th day of this present month at his father's house and that the Sheriff summon a Jury consisting of twelve freeholders for that purpose who are ordered to attend and it is further ordered that Notice of this inquest be given to the said John Gordon Junr. and that William Jones, John Thornton, Hugh Brent be summoned to give evidence touching the premises.

  It is ordered that William Nelson be allowed the sum of one dollar & fifty cents for two wolves heads by him exhibited here in Court and that the same be certified to the Auditor for payment.

  At a Court continued & held for the County of Stafford at the Court house on Friday the 6th day of June 1823.

  Present Justices Thornton, Robert Thompson, Robert Hughes, Hugh Brent & John Glassell.

  The Grand Jury returned into Court and presented the following presentments to wit

  We the Grand Jury present William Berry for a breach of the Sabbath by suffering gaming in his house on the Sabbath day on the information of Thomas Fitzpatrick.

  We the Grand Jury present William Berry for suffering a slave to go at large and hire himself out contrary to Law on the information of Thomas Fitzpatrick.

  Whereupon process was awarded against the said William Berry to appear here at the next Court to answer the said presentments.

  Ordered that the Sheriff summon William Berry to appear here at the next Court to shew cause if any he can why he should not be fined for a contempt offered to this Court by not attending yesterday as a Juror.

  Ordered that the Sheriff summon William Berry to appear here at the next Court to shew cause if any he can why he should not be fined for a contempt offered to this Court by not attending yesterday as a witness in behalf of the Commonwealth against John M. B. Chinn.

  Ordered that the Sheriff of the County summon the following persons to attend here at the next Court to serve as Grand Jurors to wit

  At a Court held for the County of Stafford at the Court house on Thursday the 19th day of June 1823.

  Present Justices Thornton, Robert Thompson, Robert Hughes, Hugh Brent & John Glassell.

  A deed from Martha Nelson & Mordecai Nelson to William Carlin and James Carlin, Executors of the last will & testament of Ann Carlin deed. for two tracts of Land in Fauquier County was acknowledged by the said Martha Nelson & Mordecai Nelson & ordered to be certified.

  A deed from James Simpson to Walter Robinson was proved by the oaths of Reuben Thornton & Robert Hughes two of the subscribing witnesses thereto & thereupon is admitted to record.

  Ordered that the Petition of Reuben Thornton Benjamin Fitzwilliam & William Fitzwilliam Exors. of William Fitzwilliam deed. be continued till the next Court herein, and that the Sheriff of this County summon the following persons to wit William Fitzhugh, Benjamin Grymes & Hugh Brent to attend here at the next Court to give evidence in the action of Detinue depending in this Court between the said Exors. Plaintiff and William P. & Milson Hughes Defendants.

  Ordered that William Payne keep the Publick Ferry from the lower end of his Land across the Rappahannock River to the Land of John Stone in the County of Caroline for the ensuing year at the same rates as heretofore & give bond with such security as the Court may approve according to Law.

  Ordered that the Sheriff of the County summon the following persons to attend here at the next Court to wit Benjamin Grymes & William Fitzhugh as witnesses in behalf of William Payne in the action of Detinue depending in this Court between the said Payne Plaintiff and Reuben Thornton Defendant.

  Ordered that the Court be adjourned untill tomorrow morning 10 o'Clock.

  At a Court held for the County of Stafford at the Court house on Friday the 20th day of June 1823.

  A deed of Trust from Robert Tomlin to Sarah Tomlin his wife for the benefit of herself & certain children therein named was proved by the oath of Thomas Tomlin a subscribing witness thereto & admitted to record.

  John Grymes Gentleman, Robert Payne, Reuben Thornton, Philip Thornton, William Fitzhugh, Robert Hughes, Hugh Brent, W. Rogers, William Dickenson, John Glassell, David Wright John Fitzhugh, & R. Tutt Gentlemen took the oath of fidelity to the Commonwealth and thereupon took their seats in Court.

  James Grymes Gentleman is by the Court elected & appointed Commissioner for the County in the room of Reuben Thornton who is excused from acting as such. It is ordered that the said James Grymes take the oath prescribed by Law before some Justice of this County & make return thereof to the next Court.

  Ordered that the Court be adjourned untill Court in Course.

  Francis William Brooke Gentleman produced here in Court a Commission constituting him Sheriff of this County in the room of William Dickinson whose term of service has expired which was read & is ordered to be recorded.

  Francis William Brooke Esquire took the oath of Sheriff of this County prescribed by Law together with the oath of fidelity to the Commonwealth.

  It is ordered that the Commissioners be authorized to settle with the said William Dickinson late Sheriff for the taxes by him collected & the disbursements made & report the same to the next Court.

  Ordered that the Sheriff summon the Commissioners to attend here at the next Court to make the report as aforesaid.

  The Court adjourned till tomorrow morning 10 o'Clock.

  At a Court continued & held for the County of Stafford at the Court house on Saturday the 21st day of June 1823.

  Present Justices Thornton, David Wright, W. Rogers Robert Thompson, Robert Hughes, Hugh Brent, John Glassell, R. Tutt, John Fitzhugh, William Fitzhugh & Philip Thornton Gentlemen.

  On the motion of William Dickinson late Sheriff who appeared here in Court & prayed a settlement of his accounts according to a former order of the Court to which the Commissioners were appointed to make a report but have failed to do so ordered that the said Commissioners attend here on the first day of the next Court to make the report aforesaid.

  Ordered that the Court be adjourned untill Court in Course.

  Ordered that the Constable in whose ward is situate the Tavern allowed John Woodward be summoned for examining him as to the truth of the allegations made by John Fitzhugh relative to the latter's Tavern accounts for the year 1822 & other accounts

  Ordered that the Petition of the Court's Superintendent of the Poor for leave to sell certain buildings and rent other buildings be received and continued with the further consideration of the same untill next Court and that the said Petition be spread upon the records.

  At a Court held for the County of Stafford at the Court house on Monday the 22nd day of September 1823.

  A deed from Robert Griggs to Walter Robinson for two tracts of Land in this County was acknowledged by the said Robert Griggs & ordered to be recorded.

  A deed from Robert Griggs to Walter Robinson for two tracts of Land in this County was acknowledged by the said Robert Griggs & ordered to be recorded.

  A deed from Robert Griggs to Walter Robinson for one tract of Land in this County was acknowledged by the said Robert Griggs & ordered to be recorded.

  A deed from Robert Griggs to Walter Robinson for one tract of Land with the slaves thereon was acknowledged by the said Robert Griggs & ordered to be recorded.

  A deed from James Jones to Robert Griggs for one tract of Land was acknowledged by the said James Jones & ordered to be recorded.

  On the motion of William Waller it is ordered that the said Waller be appointed Guardian of the infant heirs of Henry Stone deed. and that he enter into bond with security according to Law in the Clerk's Office & that the Court will make such order touching the said infants as may be deemed advisable hereafter.

  Ordered that Hugh Brent be appointed Guardian of the infant heirs of John T. Fitzhugh deed. and that he enter into bond with security according to Law in the Clerk's Office & that the Court will make such order touching the said infants as may be deemed advisable hereafter.

  It is ordered that a writ of ad quod damnum issue to try if the Petition of the Court Superintendent of the Poor for leave to sell certain buildings and rent other buildings can be granted without injury to others. The Sheriff is directed to summon a Jury for that purpose who are directed to meet on the premises on the first day of next month October next.

  Ordered that the Court be adjourned untill tomorrow morning 10 o'Clock.

  At a Court continued & held for the County of Stafford at the Court house on Wednesday the 24th day of September 1823.

  Present Justices Thornton, David Wright, W. Rogers Robert Thompson, Robert Hughes, Hugh Brent, John Glassell, R. Tutt, John Fitzhugh, William Fitzhugh, Philip Thornton, Benjamin Fitzhugh & John Minor Gentlemen.

  It is ordered that Reuben Thornton be appointed Guardian to keep a boy of colour named James who is now in the custody of James Simpson until further order of this Court and that the said Thornton enter into bond with security in the Clerk's Office in the sum of two hundred dollars for that purpose.

  On the motion of Patrick Bryan who here in Court produced satisfactory evidence that he had imported a slave from South Carolina into this Commonwealth in the month of June 1823 and that the said slave was legally held to service by the Laws of South Carolina It is ordered that the said slave be registered according to Law.

  Ordered that the Sheriff summon William Berry to appear here at the next Court to shew cause if any he can why he should not be fined for a contempt offered to this Court by not attending on Monday last as a Grand Juror for this County.

  Ordered that the Sheriff summon William Berry to appear here at the next Court to shew cause if any he can why he should not be fined for a contempt offered to this Court by not attending on Wednesday last as a witness in behalf of the Commonwealth against John M. B. Chinn.

  Henry Grymes is by the Court appointed overseer of the Publick highway in & for the ensuing year in the district formerly assigned to James Fitzhugh, bounded by Mr. Washington's line to the road leading from the mill by the Church to the Court house, which said overseer is directed to keep the same in repair according to Law.

  Ordered that this Court be adjourned untill Court in Course.

  Ordered that the Sheriff summon Daniel Fitzhugh to attend here at the next Court to shew cause if any he can why he should not be fined for a contempt offered to this Court by not attending on Tuesday last as a witness in behalf of the Commonwealth against John M. B. Chinn.

  The personal Estate of Benjamin Grymes deceased was this day returned into Court by William G. Grymes Administrator of the said Estate and the same is ordered to be recorded.

  Robert Grigg is by the Court appointed Commissioner of the Revenue for the year 1824 in the room of Reuben Thornton who declines to act as such. It is ordered that the said Robert Grigg take the oath prescribed by Law before some Justice of this County & make return thereof to the next Court.

  Present Francis W. Brooke Sheriff this day returned into Court an account of sales of the Estate of William Fitzhugh deceased which was received & is ordered to be recorded.

  A deed from Jane Stone Mother and Testatrix of John Stone deceased to William Fitzhugh, Exor. of Ann Thornton deceased for seven hundred acres of Land was proved by the oaths of Reuben Thornton, John Fitzhugh, Robert Hughes, Hugh Brent & William Thompson subscribing witnesses thereto & thereupon is admitted to record.

  The last will & testament of John Stone deceased was exhibited here in Court and proven by the oaths of two of the subscribing witnesses thereto to wit Reuben Thornton & Robert Hughes & thereupon is admitted to record together with the certificate of their oaths which is ordered to be recorded.

  James Simpson is by the Court appointed Guardian of the infant children of John Stone deceased to wit Elizabeth Stone Jane Stone & John Stone Junr. and that he enter into bond with security according to Law in the Clerk's Office in the penalty of two thousand dollars for that purpose.

  Ordered that this Court be adjourned untill Court in Course.

  Ordered that the Sheriff summon William Berry to appear here at the next Court to shew cause if any he can why he should not be fined for a contempt offered to this Court by not attending on Monday last as a Grand Juror.

  On the motion of William Fitzhugh Executor of Ann Thornton deceased it is ordered that the account of the administration of the Estate of the said Ann Thornton deceased be referred to Commissioners to be examined stated & settled and that they report the same to the Court.

  Ordered that the Sheriff summon James Simpson Senr. Joseph Blackwell & William Payne as Commissioners for that purpose.

  On the motion of Robert Grigg it is ordered that he be appointed Guardian of his infant children to wit Robert Grigg Junr. John Grigg, Henry Grigg, Daniel Grigg, William Grigg, Thomas Grigg, Fanny Grigg, & Sarah Grigg and that he enter into bond with security according to Law in the Clerk's Office for that purpose in the penalty of ten thousand dollars.

  The last will & testament of William Nelson deceased was exhibited here in Court and proven by the oaths of two of the subscribing witnesses thereto to wit John Minor & John Fitzhugh & thereupon is admitted to record together with the certificate of their oaths which is ordered to be recorded.

  Ordered that the Court be adjourned untill tomorrow morning 10 o'Clock.

  At a Court continued & held for the County of Stafford at the Court house on Tuesday the 28th day of October 1823.

  Robert Gray is by the Court recommended to the Executive as a fit person to be appointed Notary Public for this County.

  Allen Grigsby for being concerned with his brother Lewis Grigsby in fighting of Virginia vs the said Lewis Grigsby who being brought to the bar of the Court was by his Consent fined five dollars for the said offence and entered into recognizance in the penalty of twenty five dollars each for his good behavior for one year from this day

  On motion of Lewis Grigsby who was convicted by his own confession before this Court in June last for fighting Allen Grigsby was fined by the Court five dollars with costs and entered into recognizance with Security in the penalty of twenty five dollars each for his good behavior for one year from this day.

  William Payne is by the Court recommended to the Executive as a fit person to be appointed Commissioner of the Revenue for the County of Stafford for the year 1824 in the room of Robert Grigg who declines to act as such. It is ordered that the said William Payne take the oath prescribed by Law before some Justice of this County & make return thereof to the next Court.

  James Tallman, George Payne, Benjamin Payne William Payne & Thomas Payne are by the Court appointed appraisers of the Estate of William Payne Senr. deceased and ordered to appraise the same and make report thereof according to Law.

  Ordered that Reuben B. Taylor be appointed Constable in the district lately occupied by John Gordon Junr. and that he enter into bond & security according to Law.

  Lewis Grigsby is by the Court appointed overseer of the road leading from the School house to James Fitzhugh's Mill in the room of Isaac Griggs who is discharged from the same. It is ordered that the said overseer keep the same in repair according to Law.

  Upon the motion of Samuel M. Stone it is ordered that he be appointed Guardian to keep a boy of colour named John about ten years old who is bound to him until he shall arrive at the age of twenty one years & that the said Guardian give bond with security according to Law in the Clerk's Office for the penalty of one thousand dollars for the penalty of one thousand dollars for the faithful performance of his duty as Guardian to the said John.

  Ordered that William Berry be fined one dollar for failing to attend this morning as a Juror and that a Scire facias issue against him returnable to next Court to shew cause if any he can why the said fine should not be made absolute.

It is ordered that the said Robert Grigg take the oath prescribed by Law before some Justice of this County and make return thereof to the next Court.

  On the motion of Robert Grigg Commissioner of the Revenue for the year 1824 it is ordered that the account of the Administration of the Estate of Benjamin Grymes deceased be referred to Commissioners to be examined stated & settled and that they report the same to the Court.

  Ordered that the Sheriff summon James Simpson Senr. Joseph Blackwell & William Payne as Commissioners for that purpose.

  On the motion of John Fitzhugh it is ordered that he be appointed Guardian of his infant children to wit John Fitzhugh Junr., Ann Fitzhugh, Mary Fitzhugh, Sarah Fitzhugh, Henry Fitzhugh, Ellen Fitzhugh, William Fitzhugh, Eliza Fitzhugh & Thomas Fitzhugh and that he enter into bond with security according to Law in the Clerk's Office for that purpose in the penalty of ten thousand dollars.
