Explain to a school board member why cutting computer applications could affect students in college:

 cutting a computer in half

Here's how you can explain to a school board member why cutting computer applications could affect students in college:

Essential Skills, Missing Piece:

Thank you for your time today. I'm concerned about the proposed removal of the computer applications class. While I understand the need for budgetary adjustments, computer skills are increasingly vital for college success, regardless of major. Here's how cutting this class could disadvantage our students:

Digital Literacy Gap: Many colleges now expect students to be proficient in basic computer applications like word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations. Without this foundation, our students might struggle to keep pace with their peers in their introductory courses.

Research and Writing: College requires a lot of research and writing. Computer applications allow students to organize information, create citations, and collaborate effectively – all essential skills they may not develop elsewhere.

Communication and Collaboration: Many online platforms are used for communication and group projects in college. Without a strong foundation in computer applications, students could face difficulties using these tools to their full potential.

Career Preparedness: Regardless of field, most jobs today require some level of computer literacy. Cutting this class could put our students at a disadvantage in the job market after graduation.

By investing in computer literacy, we're investing in our students' future success.  The skills they learn in this class will benefit them not only in college but also throughout their careers.  Thank you for considering this perspective.

Additional Points:

Highlight specific colleges or programs in your area that require computer application skills.

Provide data on the percentage of jobs that require computer literacy.

Offer to connect the school board member with educators who can speak to the importance of computer applications.
