A Letter to the BOE

 windfall of money

Why Our Schools Need Science, Math, and Social Studies: An Investment in Our Future

Dear School Board Member,

As you know, the recent sale of school property brought in $259,000. While this may seem like a windfall, I urge you to consider a strategic investment in our school's future: funding the reinstatement of core classes like math, science, and social studies.

Math: The Invisible Ingredient in Everything We Do. From calculating cooking times in the cafeteria to understanding the physics of a perfectly bounced basketball, math skills are woven into daily life.  Without them, students struggle to make informed decisions, solve problems creatively, and even participate effectively in the workforce.

Science: Unveiling the Magic Behind the Mystery Meat.  Science isn't just about beakers and Bunsen burners. It's about critical thinking, applying the scientific method to everyday situations, and understanding the world around us.  Imagine not knowing the science of nutrition –  how will students make healthy choices in the very lunch line funded by the property sale?

Social Studies: Understanding Ourselves and Our World.  Social studies isn't just memorizing dates. It's about learning from history, analyzing current events, and developing the skills to be responsible citizens.  Without this foundation, how will students navigate a complex and interconnected world?

Investing in these core classes is an investment in our students' potential. It equips them with the critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills they need to succeed in college, careers, and beyond.

Think of the $259,000 as a seed.  By planting it in core academic programs, we can cultivate a generation of well-rounded individuals who can contribute meaningfully to society.

There are alternatives to cutting core classes.  Perhaps explore streamlining administrative costs.  The future of our students, and our community, depends on a strong educational foundation.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
