Explain in tactful manner to your daughter your response that she's wants to go to Harvard instead of a community college. Assure her that it doesn't bother you that money isn't an issue.
Assure her that you don't mind that you and her will be in debt for the next 40 years. Explain that you don't mind if you lose your home to foreclosure and you may have to sell your pickup truck and ride a bicycle for 30 miles for the rest of your career.
Daughter: "Dad, I'm really bummed. I know you said Harvard is a great school, but I was thinking maybe community college first."
You: "Hey, I understand completely. Community college is a fantastic option, and it can save a lot of money. Let's talk about it."
Daughter: (Sighs) "Yeah, that's kind of the point. Harvard sounds amazing, but I don't want you guys to go broke because of me."
You: "Honey, listen closely. Money isn't the deciding factor here. We can definitely work through the financial side of things, no matter which path you choose."
Daughter: (Eyebrow raised) "Really? Even if it means, like, mountains of debt for decades?"
You: "We'll figure it out together. We have a good plan, and honestly, your happiness and success are worth so much more than any financial burden. Even if it takes some sacrifices, like maybe downsizing the truck or finding alternative transportation for a while, that's totally okay."
Daughter: (Skeptical) "Downsizing the truck? Biking to work for years? That sounds pretty drastic, Dad."
You: "Look, those are just hypothetical examples. The point is, we're a team, and we'll face any challenges that come along. But here's the thing – Harvard offers incredible opportunities, and if that's your dream, I want you to chase it with everything you've got. Community college is also a great path, with its own set of advantages. Let's explore both options together and see which one feels like the best fit for you and your future."
