The Gift of the Magi
Characters:
Narrator
Della (Early 20s)
- Jim (Early 20s)
- Madame (French Accent, 30s)
Setting:
Scene 1: A small, sparsely furnished apartment. Scene 2: A high-end hair salon. Scene 3: The Dillinghams' apartment (same as scene 1).
Scene 1
(Sound of jingling bells)
Narrator: In a shabby New York apartment, Christmas Eve cast a bittersweet glow. Della, a wisp of a woman with cascading brown hair, counted her meager earnings - a mere $1.87.
(Della rummages through her purse, sighs)
Della: $1.87. That's all? Jim deserves something wonderful for Christmas.
Narrator: Across the room, Jim examined his prized possession, a gold pocket watch that had been passed down through generations.
(Camera pans to Jim, holding the watch with a wistful expression)
Jim: Just a little longer, watch. Della deserves something special.
Narrator: Both Della and Jim cherished something far more valuable than money - their love for each other. But they yearned to express that love with a perfect Christmas gift.
Della: There has to be a way!
(Della rushes to a mirror, her eyes land on her hair)
Della (determined): My hair... it's my one beauty. Maybe...
Scene 2
(Upbeat music plays as Della enters a luxurious hair salon)
Della (nervously): Excuse me?
Madame (glancing at Della's hair): My dear, with hair like that, the possibilities are endless!
Della: I need to sell it.
Madame (taken aback): Sell it? Your hair? It's magnificent!
Della: (showing the money) I need enough for a Christmas present for my husband.
Madame (touched): Ah, l'amour! Very well, twenty dollars.
Della (eyes wide): Twenty dollars?
Madame: For such glorious hair, it's a steal!
Della (beaming): Thank you!
Scene 3
(Della wraps a small package. Jim enters, his face etched with concern)
Jim: Della, what's wrong?
Della: Nothing, darling. Merry Christmas!
(They exchange gifts. Della opens hers - a set of beautiful combs)
Della (voice trembling): Jim, these are perfect! But... my hair...
Jim (confused): Your hair?
(Della reveals her short haircut)
Della: I sold it to buy them for you.
Jim (tears welling up): Della...
Narrator: Jim reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box.
(Jim opens the box, revealing a platinum fob for a pocket watch)
Jim: I sold my watch to get this for you.
Della (gasps): You sold your watch?
Narrator: They both laughed, a bittersweet symphony of love and sacrifice.
Jim: The gifts may not be perfect, Della, but our love is.
Della: Absolutely perfect, Jim. After all, the Magi who brought gifts to the Christ child were wise men, but even wiser, they followed a star, a symbol of love that shines brighter than any gift.
(They embrace, the warmth of their love filling the small apartment)
Narrator: And so, on that Christmas Eve, the Dillinghams learned a valuable lesson: the greatest gift is the love they shared.
(Fade out with the sound of jingling bells)
