Where is Yelk WV?

Yelk, WV was a former community in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. It was located on the West Fork of the Greenbrier River, about 10 miles northeast of Marlinton. The community was founded in the 1880s and was named after the Yelk family, who were early settlers in the area. Yelk had a post office from 1894 to 1920. The community was abandoned in the early 1920s.

The following is a quote from the West Virginia Archives and History website about Yelk:

Yelk was a small community in Pocahontas County located on the West Fork of the Greenbrier River. The community was founded in the 1880s and was named after the Yelk family, who were early settlers in the area. Yelk had a post office from 1894 to 1920. The community was abandoned in the early 1920s.

The Yelk post office was established on February 21, 1894, and discontinued on July 31, 1920. The postmasters were:

  • John Yelk (1894-1895)
  • William Yelk (1895-1920)

The Yelk community was located in what is now the Monongahela National Forest. The site of the community is now a remote area with no roads or trails leading to it.
