The river in West Virginia that is known as "The River
That Flows Backwards" is the Greenbrier River. It is a tributary of the
New River, which eventually flows into the Ohio River. The Greenbrier
River flows generally northward, but for a short stretch near its
headwaters, it flows southward. This is because the Greenbrier River is
actually older than the mountains that it flows through. When the
mountains were formed, the Greenbrier River was already flowing in its
current direction. The mountains simply grew up around it. The
Greenbrier River is a popular destination for whitewater rafting and
fishing. It is also home to a number of scenic waterfalls, including the
Cascades and the Sandstone Falls.
