a lesson plan about genetic principles applicable to a 3rd grader:

Objectives:

  • Students will be able to define the term "gene."
  • Students will be able to explain how genes are passed from parents to offspring.
  • Students will be able to identify some of the factors that can influence a person's genes.

Materials:

  • Whiteboard or chart paper
  • Markers or crayons
  • Pictures of different families
  • Worksheets about genes and genetics

Procedure:

  1. Begin by asking students what they know about genes. What are they? Where are they found? How do they work?
  2. Explain that genes are the basic units of inheritance. They are found in the cells of all living things, including humans. Genes control the development of all of our physical characteristics, such as our hair color, eye color, and height.
  3. Show students pictures of different families. Ask them to identify the similarities and differences between the families. How are the members of each family related? What physical characteristics do they share?
  4. Explain that genes are passed from parents to offspring. When a sperm cell fertilizes an egg cell, the two cells join together and form a new cell. This new cell contains a combination of genes from both the sperm cell and the egg cell.
  5. Discuss some of the factors that can influence a person's genes. These factors include the environment, diet, and lifestyle.
  6. Distribute worksheets about genes and genetics. Have students complete the worksheets and then discuss their answers as a class.

Assessment:

  • Observe students' participation in the discussion.
  • Collect and review students' worksheets.

Differentiation:

  • For students who are struggling, provide them with more visuals and concrete examples.
  • For students who are ahead, challenge them to research a specific genetic disorder or condition.

Extension:

  • Have students create a family tree of their own.
  • Have students research the history of genetics.
  • Have students write a story about a character who has a genetic disorder.
