In August 1861, Lee was appointed commander of Confederate forces in western Virginia. He led his army to Valley Mountain, near Mingo, in Randolph County. The Confederates encamped there for several weeks, but they were eventually forced to withdraw after being defeated by Union forces at the Battle of Cheat Mountain.

Lee never returned to Mingo County after the Civil War. However, his brief presence in the area has left a lasting legacy. There is a statue of Lee in Mingo Flats, and a Confederate monument was dedicated in the county in 1913.

In recent years, there has been some debate about the appropriateness of these monuments. Some people believe that they should be removed because they glorify a figure who fought for slavery. Others believe that the monuments should be preserved as historical artifacts.
