They murdered many of the settlers and took a number of captives with them as they retreated down New River, the Kanawha River, and the Ohio River to their villages. Mary Ingles was one of the captives and she later escaped and told her friends that the Shawnee had stopped for a time at a salt spring on the Kanawha River to make salt.

He observed an ingenious youth fishing along Knapps creek with a fig string of bass which he had caught at the reunion grounds. There were a number of pools where there were no bass and the youth would get in a pool and scare the fish under shelving rocks so that he could catch them.

  • Deputy game warden Ernest Sharp was called to investigate a forest fire. Charles McCarty has moved into town. Road work has begun in this section of good roads.

  • Earnest Sharp has returned to Denmark. W. P. Starchar, a former school teacher, returned to his home at Ripley, Jackson County after visiting. A group of local women are working to raise money to purchase a bell for the new Methodist church. The church will host an ice cream supper on Saturday evening to benefit the bell fund. The community is invited to attend and enjoy an evening of music and refreshments.

  • A disastrous fire occurred in Alvon recently. The fire began during daylight hours when the heat of the sun and usual daily winds made the fire difficult to control. Another fire happened earlier this spring as the result of a burning automobile that left the road and went into the woods; luckily, no one was injured.
