August 23-24, 1878 – Teacher Examinations in Huntersville

An examination for teachers was held in Huntersville, West Virginia on August 23rd and 24th, 1878. The usual fee of one dollar for a certificate was retained by the president. The following applicants were granted teaching certificates: C.L. Stulting, B.M. Price, C.M. McClure, W.S. Hamilton, J.W. McLaughlin, C.W. Woodford, J.R. Hefner, and Miss Sallie Campbell.


September 2-4, 1878 – Court Convenes in Bath County, Virginia

On September 2nd, 1878, the court convened for a session in Bath County, Virginia. Samuel Vance presided over the court. On the third day of the session, George Kelley was punished with 30 lashes for a felony charge.


March 10, 1879 - Bear Moore Whipped

On March 10, 1879, Bear Moore was whipped 30 times for marrying two women. He had been indicted for bigamy but the court was advised that they had no authority to proceed with the case so he was dismissed.


May 12, 1879 - James Cunningham Indicted

James Cunningham was indicted on May 12, 1879 and tried for selling cider at the Bath County Courthouse. He was also the victim of three indictments on May 10, 1879 for retailing liquor without a license, keeping a tippling house, and selling cider.


1912 – Frost School Student Photo

A student group photo was taken at Frost School in 1912. Nova Burns was the teacher. The original photo is in the possession of Mrs. Adolphus (Nova) Shears.


1918 – Seneca Trail Markers

The Seneca Trail was marked by Andrew Price in 1918. One marker is located on Droop Mountain, 16 miles from Marlinton, one is in Buckeye, four miles from Marlinton, one is for the one for Buckeye four miles from Marlinton, one is for the Battle of Droop Mountain, 24 miles from Marlinton, one is for Elk (Mary's Chapel) 12 miles north of Marlinton, and one is in Edray, 24 miles north of Marlinton.


July 25, 1918 – World War I Letter

A letter was written on July 25, 1918 from “Somewhere in France” to a mother and father. The writer describes their experiences in France and asks about happenings back at home.


1926 - Green Bank High School Yearbook Staff Photo

A yearbook staff photo was taken at Green Bank High School in the Spring of 1926. The original photo is in the possession of the Eugene Burner Society. The yearbook staff included Eugene Burner, F. Hamrick, William Uttermog, Eugene Arbogast, John Hunter, William (Catherine) O'Brien, and Geraldine Kinsner.


March 13, 1926 - Hannah Shearer School Report

A report for the third month of school was filed for Hannah Shearer School. Grace Shearer was the teacher. Students listed in the report were Lula Galford, Georgia and Marie Varner, Lucille Hannah, Margaret Ad and Raymond Mace, Joe and Stanley Zuck.


March 24, 1927 – Seventh Annual Green Bank District High School Reunion

The seventh annual reunion for the Green Bank District High School was held on Sunday, August 14th, 1960 at Droop Mountain State Park. Rosa Waugh was elected president, Seebert Wilfong was elected vice-president, Mildred Rimel was elected treasurer, and Catherine Wolfe was elected secretary. Four people were appointed to a committee to make plans for the 1961 reunion.


August 29, 1926 – Birth of Nellie Sue Burges

Nellie Sue Burges was born to Mr. and Mrs. Allen Burges at Millpoint.


September 11 & 16, 1926 – Box and Pie Suppers

There will be box and pie suppers in Pocahontas County on Saturday, September 11th at Stony Bottom Schoolhouse and on Thursday, September 16th at the Brushy Flat Schoolhouse. The proceeds from these events will benefit the church.


September 18, 1926 - Box and Pie Supper

A box and pie supper was held at Mt. Pleasant Church at Indian Draft on Saturday, September 18th to benefit the church.


1928 – Eighth Grade Graduation Ceremony

Sixty eighth-grade students graduated from the Edray and Huntersville districts. The graduation ceremony took place in the school auditorium on a Friday afternoon. A list of the students was provided, separated by their district.


April 11, 1928 – Eighth-Grade Diploma Examinations

The first diploma examination for eighth-grade students was held on Thursday, April 11, 1928. Written tests were given on Arithmetic, Reading, Hygiene, Government, English, and Grammar. Only the grades on manuscripts and Civil Government were used to calculate the student’s final grade.


April 12, 1928 - "The Pocahontas Times" and the Kindling Wood Plant

On April 12, 1928, an educated, colored man came to Marlinton to start a newspaper called “Watoga,”. Around the same time, another man got a deed for five thousand dollars to start a kindling wood plant. The kindling wood business owner went bankrupt because he had purchased the plant at a high cost and a sawmill had the rights to the timber. The kindling wood plant was torn down, and the sawmill was moved to another location.


1931 – Pocahontas County History

The Pocahontas Times was printed on August 6, 1931, and was issue 26 of volume 50. The Pocahontas Times began in 1882 and had a variety of editors and publishers over the course of its existence. The Pocahontas Times was published weekly and only rarely missed publication over its 39-year history.


1931-1932 School Year – Greenbrier District Teacher Placement

The following teachers were placed in the Greenbrier District for the 1931-1932 school year: Maud Bumgardner, Pearl Carter, Eula Warwick, Goldie Gaye Hannah, Florence Jordan, Ruby May Hannah, Effie Moore, Mary Moore, Martha Ritz, and Mrs. Stella Conrad.


1935 – Edray District High School Graduation

On Friday night, graduating exercises were held for the Edray District High School. The graduating class was the largest in the school’s history with twenty-five students. Professor Wilbur Jones Kay, head of the Department of Public Speaking at West Virginia University, gave the commencement address.

August 14th, 1960 – Seventh Annual Green Bank District High School Reunion

The seventh annual reunion for the Green Bank District High School was held on Sunday, August 14th, 1960, at Droop Mountain State Park. Rosa Waugh was elected president, Seebert Wilfong was elected vice-president, Mildred Rimel was elected treasurer, and Catherine Wolfe was elected secretary. A four-person committee was formed to plan the 1961 reunion.


July 1963 – Cass Scenic Railroad Shay Engine Project

In July of 1963, the Cass Railroad was undergoing a major project to prepare a Shay engine for a trip to Cass. The Cass Scenic Railroad, formerly called the Greenbrier, Cheat and Elk, had the biggest engines of their kind. The newest engine, #14, was sold to Western Maryland Railroad to be used as a helper on Thomas Mountain north of Elkins.
