Timeline of Events

  • 1765: The Green Bank Community in West Virginia experiences difficulties and builds homes in Deer Creek Valley.
  • June 1780: Early settlers in the Green Bank Community begin surveying land.
  • July 7, 1780: The first land grant in the Green Bank area is dated in Augusta Grant Book No. 1, in the Auditors Office at Charleston, granted to Jacob War.
  • 1781: Captain Bradshaw enters military service
  • 1790: Theory of government worked out
  • 1807: A history of New England published in Philadelphia
  • 1810: A new law book called "The New Virginia Justice" shows the proper legal procedure. The oath of office requires kissing the bible.
  • 1811: A copy of the New Testament was printed in Philadelphia.
  • May 17, 1861: Company forms at Monterey, VA. Roll call and a squad assembled.
  • May 21, 1861: Men march through town in uniforms.
  • Late May 1861: Men head towards Beverly
  • May 22, 1861: Men arrive at Baker's Hotel. Men stand in the church yard in uniforms
  • May 24, 1861: Men begin marching to Grafton.
  • June 1863: Jenkins' Cavalry Brigade conducts a campaign in Pennsylvania, reaching as far as Harrisburg, and attaining the "high-water mark" of the Confederacy.
  • October 5, 1863: A memo from General Robert E. Lee to Jefferson Davis discusses the performance and suitability of certain officers, particularly General W.E. Jones.
  • October 9, 1863: Lee dispatches an order to Cooper, regarding the case of W.E. Jones. President approved suggestion for promotion of W.E. Jones to Brigadier General.
  • October 9, 1863: Special orders issue, appointing W.E. Jones to report for duty to Maj. Gen. Sam Jones
  • October 11, 1863: Sam Jones receives orders to report for assignment to the cavalry
  • Fall 1863: Battle of Droop Mountain
  • 1865: Betty and Nancy Snedegar find two guns on Droop Mountain.
  • 1873: Reck Convention was formed and it was noted as ineffective.

  • January 1929: A notice of application for a pardon for Gilbert Diley is made.
  • February 1929: Notice of sale to Range Lumber Company in West Virginia
  • April 17, 1929: Mildred Arlene is born.
  • May 30, 1929: Nature Notes, Geology Specimens Exhibit
  • July 1, 1929: Bids for the transportation of pupils are requested.
  • 1932: Dr L. C. McCutcheon purchases 9 acres of property
  • January 1934: An application for sale of delinquent lands is put into place
  • 1935: Basil Sharp of Marlinton is known for his Saturday antics
  • 1937: Denmar's second phase of history begins, it is realized that the facility constitutes a fire hazard.
  • 1941: Lanty W. Howard is called to service in the Army
  • May 13, 1941: Virle Harper Hamrick enters service in the Navy
  • December 1, 1941: The West Virginia is commissioned at Pearl Harbor
  • March 26, 1943: Lanty W. Howard reports to the local Board for transport to the Reception Center
  • April 2, 1943: Lanty W. Howard goes to Fort Hayes, OH.
  • April 2, 1943: C.C. Carr of Marlinton goes into the US Navy
  • April 5, 1943: Jane Layton's daughter of Marlinton suffers an attack of appendicitis.
  • July 28, 1943: The 168th Regiment, after combat for 291 days, is relieved after crossing the river
  • September 1943: John W. Patton becomes a second lieutenant
  • May 7, 1942: The West Virginia is floated and begins modernization
  • August 1947: Bonds for Armed Forces to be Cashed
  • October 20, 1972: Joe is named fireman of the year
  • 1976: Joe is named Jaycee of the Year
  • April 7, 1977: Trustees of the United Methodist Church in West Virginia agree to conditions, covenants, rights of way.
  • June 22, 1977: Members of the Board of Trustees of the West Virginia Annual Conference sign off on property conveyance.
  • October 6, 1977: Newspaper ad for Braces, Bits, Nails, and other tools
  • 1977: Joe serves as chairman of the Pocahontas County Cancer Society.
  • 1977: Joe is President of Cub Scout Pack 33.
  • 1977: Plans for community radio station in Pocahontas County are underway.

  • Jefferson Davis: (1808-1889) President of the Confederate States of America. He receives Lee's memo on military personnel.
  • William E. "Grumble" Jones: A Confederate General, considered brave and intelligent, but his previous conduct subjected him to a court martial. Promoted to Brigadier General in October 1863
  • Sam Jones: A Confederate Major General who commanded troops in West Virginia
  • Jubal Early: (1816-1894) Confederate General, who commanded multiple brigades and divisions in the Civil War, known for his command in Maryland and the Shenandoah Valley.
  • John Randolph Phil: A young man, who made a speech at a flag dedication
  • Captain Reger: Led a mountain guard.
  • Rev. Mr. Rives: Methodist minister in Phillip, West Virginia
  • Captain Sturmer: A veteran of past wars, called the Mountain Guard a "venerable class."
  • Mr. and Mrs. Morral: Presented the flag to be used by the Mountain Guard
  • James Park: Made a motion in a committee.
  • Dr. Richard Welch: A pastor who joined with a reporter
  • Richard McIlwaine: A man asked to come as a reporter.
  • James Whiteshaw: Brought word that an insurrection had failed.
  • William Fleming: Accompanied others to Allegheny

  • Thomas Jefferson: (1743-1826) Governor of Virginia, known to have abolished the tax that supported the established church.
