Prepositional phrases: Creating Prompts


  1. Basic directions:

    • To the north, south, east, west
    • Towards the horizon, zenith, nadir
    • Upwards, downwards, forwards, backwards
  2. Relative positions:

    • Above, below, beside, beyond
    • Across from, around the corner, behind, in front of
    • Inside, outside, near, far
    • On the left, right, hand, outskirts
  3. Movement:

    • Along, across, by, through
    • Down, into, out of, onto
    • Over, past, towards, under
    • Up, upon, within, without
  4. Path and distance:

    • At a distance, at arm's length, within reach
    • A stone's throw away, a hair's breadth, a mile down the road
    • In the immediate vicinity, far and wide, halfway there
  5. Figurative directions:

    • Ahead of time, off the beaten path, on the right track
    • Out of sight, out of mind, heading in the same direction
    • Taking a different route, going nowhere fast, reaching new heights
  6. Compass points:

    • North-east, north-west, south-east, south-west
    • East-north-east, east-south-east, west-north-west, west-south-west
    • Northerly, southerly, easterly, westerly
  7. Specific locations:

    • Downstream, upstream, uphill, downhill
    • Onboard, ashore, inland, offshore
    • Seaward, landward, homeward, skyward

These are just a few examples, and you can easily create more by combining different prepositions or using them with specific nouns and adjectives. Remember, the possibilities are endless!
