The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) releases statewide summative assessment results annually to provide an overview of student performance in English language arts (ELA), mathematics, and science. These results are used to measure progress towards state and federal standards, identify areas for improvement, and inform policy decisions.
The most recent assessment results, from the 2023 spring administration, show that there were slight improvements in overall proficiency rates in ELA, mathematics, and science compared to 2022. However, proficiency rates remain below state and national targets.
Here are some key findings from the 2023 assessment results:
- Overall proficiency in ELA: 44% of students were proficient, a 2% increase over 2022.
- Overall proficiency in math: 35% of students were proficient, a 2% increase over 2022.
- Overall proficiency in science: 29% of students were proficient, a 1% increase over 2022.
Here are some additional highlights from the 2023 assessment results:
- Grades 3 and 8 saw the largest gains in ELA proficiency.
- All grades except 11 saw gains in math proficiency.
- Grade 4 remained the same in ELA proficiency, and grade 11 remained the same in math proficiency.
- Grade 7 was the only grade level that saw a drop in ELA proficiency.
The WVDE is committed to working with schools and districts to improve student achievement. The department is providing targeted support to schools and districts with the lowest proficiency rates, and is also implementing new initiatives to improve teaching and learning in ELA, mathematics, and science.
