History of Slatyfork, WV, with images:

Nestled amidst the picturesque mountains of Pocahontas County, West Virginia, lies the unincorporated community of Slatyfork, a place steeped in rich history and a resilient spirit. Its origins can be traced back to the 1700s when William Sharp, Sr., a pioneer from Tinkling Springs, Virginia, ventured over the mountains seeking a new life. His son, William Sharp, Jr., settled in Edray, where he became a prominent figure. William, Jr. purchased a vast tract of land in what is now Slatyfork, along the Elk River, and later passed it down to his son, William III.

William III built a log home for his family in Slatyfork, a structure that still stands today, a testament to the town's enduring heritage. His son, Silas, a survivor of the Civil War, established his own homestead and raised a family. The Sharp family played a pivotal role in the development of Slatyfork, their entrepreneurial spirit leaving an indelible mark on the community.

In 1884, Luther David Sharp, commonly known as L.D., opened the doors to Sharp's Country Store, a general store that quickly became the heart of Slatyfork. With just $15, L.D. began by purchasing goods from travelers and selling them to local residents. His store, housed in a modest structure, soon flourished, catering to the needs of the growing community.

As Slatyfork evolved, so did Sharp's Country Store. L.D. constructed a two-story building to accommodate his expanding business, and the store became a hub for social gatherings and lively discussions. Generations of locals have frequented Sharp's Country Store, cherishing its role as a place of connection and community spirit.

Over the years, Slatyfork has witnessed significant transformations, from its early days as a frontier settlement to its current status as a peaceful retreat nestled within the Monongahela National Forest. The town's rich history and enduring spirit continue to captivate visitors and residents alike.

Today, Slatyfork offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Visitors can enjoy hiking, fishing, camping, and other outdoor activities amidst the stunning mountain scenery.

Slatyfork is a place where time seems to slow down, where the beauty of nature and the warmth of community spirit prevail. It is a place where the past is cherished, the present is savored, and the future is filled with promise.
