The name "New Lewisburg" was given to Marlinton, West Virginia when it was founded in 1889. The name was chosen because the town was located in the same county as Lewisburg, the county seat of Greenbrier County. The town was originally platted by Mr. A. McLaughlin, who was a businessman from Lewisburg.

The name "New Lewisburg" was only used for a few years. In 1891, the name was changed to Marlinton. The name "Marlinton" is believed to be derived from the Algonquian word "marlinton," which means "place of the trout."

The name change from "New Lewisburg" to "Marlinton" was likely due to a number of factors. First, the town was located in a different valley than Lewisburg, and it was felt that the name "Marlinton" would better reflect the town's unique location. Second, the name "New Lewisburg" was seen as being too similar to the name of the county seat, and it was felt that a new name would help to distinguish the town.

The name "Marlinton" has been used by the town ever since, and it is now the official name of the town. The name "New Lewisburg" is still sometimes used by older residents of the town, but it is no longer the official name.
