Unit Syllabus: The Architecture of Language
Duration: 4 Weeks
Subject: English Language Arts / Grammar
Goal: To move students beyond rote memorization of rules toward an understanding of how grammar functions as a tool for clarity, style, and expression.
Unit Objectives
By the end of this unit, students will be able to:
Identify and explain the function of the eight parts of speech.
Analyze sentence structures to correct fragments, run-ons, and comma splices.
Apply correct punctuation rules (commas, semicolons, colons) to enhance clarity.
Revise writing for subject-verb agreement, active voice, and parallel structure.
Week 1: The Building Blocks (Parts of Speech)
Focus: Recognizing that every word has a specific job within a sentence.
Day 1: Nouns and Pronouns
Concept: Common vs. Proper nouns; Concrete vs. Abstract nouns.
Focus: Pronoun cases (Subjective, Objective, Possessive) and avoiding vague references.
Activity: "Noun Hunt" in a descriptive passage; rewriting sentences to improve pronoun clarity.
Day 2: Verbs (The Engine)
Concept: Action verbs vs. Linking verbs.
Focus: Verb tenses (Simple, Perfect, Progressive).
Activity: "Vivid Verb" replacement workshop (replacing "walked" with "trudged," "sauntered," etc.).
Day 3: Adjectives and Adverbs ( The Decorators)
Concept: Modifiers and what they modify.
Focus: The difference between "good" vs. "well" and "bad" vs. "badly."
Activity: Writing descriptive paragraphs using sensory modifiers.
Day 4: The Connectors (Prepositions, Conjunctions, Interjections)
Concept: Prepositional phrases acting as adjectives/adverbs. FANBOYS (Coordinating conjunctions).
Activity: "Preposition Yoga" (demonstrating position); Identifying FANBOYS in news articles.
Day 5: Week 1 Assessment & Application
Task: Parts of Speech Quiz.
Writing Task: Write a 200-word narrative using (and highlighting) at least one of each part of speech.
Week 2: The Blueprint (Sentence Structure & Syntax)
Focus: Understanding how words combine to create meaning and variety.
Day 1: Subjects and Predicates
Concept: Finding the "Who" and the "Did What."
Focus: Simple subjects vs. Complete subjects.
Activity: Deconstructing complex sentences to find the core Subject-Verb pair.
Day 2: Phrases vs. Clauses
Concept: Independent (Main) Clauses vs. Dependent (Subordinate) Clauses.
Focus: Subordinating conjunctions (AAWWUBBIS - Although, After, When, While, Until, Because, Before, If, Since).
Activity: Clause sorting game; combining clauses to create meaning.
Day 3: The Four Sentence Types
Concept: Simple, Compound, Complex, Compound-Complex.
Focus: Using sentence variety to improve writing flow.
Activity: "Sentence Math" worksheet (Independent + Dependent = Complex).
Day 4: The "Big Three" Errors
Concept: Fragments, Run-ons, and Comma Splices.
Focus: How to fix them using periods, semicolons, or conjunctions.
Activity: "Editing ER" – students "perform surgery" on a paragraph full of errors.
Day 5: Week 2 Assessment & Application
Task: Sentence Structure Quiz (Identify type and fix errors).
Writing Task: Rewrite a "choppy" paragraph (all simple sentences) into one with varied sentence structures.
Week 3: The Glue & Polish (Punctuation & Mechanics)
Focus: Using punctuation to control rhythm and clarify meaning.
Day 1: The Comma (Part 1)
Concept: Commas in lists; Commas in compound sentences (before FANBOYS).
Activity: "Oxford Comma" debate and examples.
Day 2: The Comma (Part 2)
Concept: Introductory phrases/clauses; Non-essential elements (Appositives).
Activity: "Interrupter" practice—inserting information into the middle of sentences correctly.
Day 3: The Power Players (Semicolons & Colons)
Concept: Semicolons to join independent clauses; Colons to introduce lists or emphasis.
Activity: "Connector Challenge": Rewrite sentences removing "and/but" and using semicolons instead.
Day 4: Apostrophes & Quotation Marks
Concept: Possession vs. Contraction (Its vs. It's). Dialogue formatting.
Activity: "Possession Obsession" worksheet; Writing a short dialogue script.
Day 5: Week 3 Assessment & Application
Task: Punctuation Mechanics Quiz.
Writing Task: "The Unpunctuated Letter" – Insert all missing punctuation into a raw text block.
Week 4: Refining the Craft (Usage & Style)
Focus: Advanced rules and stylistic choices for sophisticated writing.
Day 1: Subject-Verb Agreement
Concept: Matching singular/plural subjects with verbs.
Focus: Tricky subjects (Everyone, Neither/Nor, Collective nouns).
Activity: Agreement error hunt in published writing.
Day 2: Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement
Concept: Ensuring pronouns match the gender and number of the noun they replace.
Focus: Singular "they" usage and maintaining consistency.
Day 3: Active vs. Passive Voice
Concept: Who is doing the action? (Zombies check: If you can add "by zombies" after the verb, it's passive).
Focus: Converting passive sentences to active for stronger writing.
Activity: Rewriting a passive government report into an active news story.
Day 4: Parallel Structure
Concept: Balancing items in a series (e.g., "hiking, swimming, and biking" vs. "hiking, swimming, and to bike").
Activity: Analyzing famous speeches (MLK, JFK) for parallelism.
Day 5: Final Unit Assessment
Part 1: Comprehensive Grammar Test.
Part 2: Reflection Essay: Students write a 1-page reflection on their writing style, applying at least 5 distinct grammar rules learned during the unit (annotated).
