Following the close of the Civil War. the Academy building was remodeled and renamed the "Advanced School." This school served until 1916. when it was replaced by the present high school.
The last session was taught by C. E. Flynn. who later became County Superintendent.
In 1916 Dr. Leland Moomau and other interested citizens founded the Green Bank High and Graded Schools. The first levy was sufficient to build the plan known as the high school At first the high school and grades were both in the same part of the building. As enrollment increased, the building was extended to what is now the gymnasium. In 1926. the present gymnasium was erected
The first school term opened in the fall of 1918 with a small enrollment. The first principal was W.P. Haught of Bristol. West Virginia. The first faculty was Misses Lucy Meredith. Margaiet Hunt, and Lillian Moomau. The first graduate was Miss Grace Curry.
N. Phay Taylor, the second principal, was succeeded by T. P. Harwood. who served four years. In 1936. Claude McMilhon became principal and served until his death in the spring of 1945. Mr. Mack Brooks. Assistant County Superintendent, served until the end of that term. In the fall of 1945. Mr Virgil B. Harris of Gassaway became the 7th and last principal.
Basketball was organized early in the history of else school, football was organized in 1926. Home economics was starred in 1921. The Future Homemakers club was organized in 1930 and is one of the oldest in the state. In 1930a separate Vocational Agricultural building was constructed; the following year, the bus garage was erected The hot lunch program was introduced about the year 1935.
In 1936 an addition to the main building was nude and steam heat was installed. In 1944 the band was organized under the supervision of Miss Margaret Johnson. In 1946 a new floor was lain in the gym and a new heating system w*» installed.
In 1946 the lunch room was remodeled lo serve the 500 pupils and personnel The installation of freezing units in 1948 enabled the Vo-Ag students to butcher and freeze the meat served at these meals. The county Health Immunization program began about 25 years ago under the supervision of President L. C. McCutcheon and U. H. Hannah.
In 1949 the seniors established the tradition of an annual tree-planting day under the supervision of Mr. W. E-Blackhurst In 1946. Green Bank High School established another tradition, the annual homecoming In 1969 tome
