Outline of Hebrews 11:

I. Introduction to Faith (vv. 1-3)

  • Definition of faith as the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.
  • Importance of faith for obtaining a good report from God.
  • The world was created by God's word through faith.

II. Examples of Faith from the Old Testament (vv. 4-38)

A. Abel (v. 4)

  • Offered a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, demonstrating righteousness.

B. Enoch (v. 5)

  • Translated to heaven without seeing death, pleasing God through faith.

C. Noah (vv. 6-7)

  • Built the ark in response to God's warning, condemning the world and inheriting righteousness.

D. Abraham (vv. 8-19)

  • Obeyed God's call to leave his land for a future inheritance.
  • Dwelt in the promised land as a stranger, looking for a heavenly city.
  • Through faith, Sara received strength to conceive and have Isaac.
  • Offered Isaac in sacrifice, trusting God's ability to raise him up.

E. Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph (vv. 20-22)

  • Isaac blessed his sons regarding future events.
  • Jacob blessed Joseph's sons and worshipped leaning on his staff.
  • Joseph prophesied about the Israelites' departure from Egypt and gave instructions for his bones.

F. Moses (vv. 23-29)

  • Saved by his parents despite the king's decree.
  • Chose suffering with God's people over the pleasures of sin.
  • Led the Israelites out of Egypt, fearing not the king.
  • Instituted the Passover and kept the blood sprinkled to protect from the Angel of Death.
  • Led the Israelites through the Red Sea, causing the Egyptians to drown.

G. Rahab (v. 31)

  • Saved for her faith through receiving the spies.

H. Other Heroes of Faith (vv. 32-34)

  • Subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, received promises, and accomplished various feats through faith.

I. Persecution and Suffering (vv. 35-38)

  • Women received their dead back to life.
  • Some endured torture and refused deliverance for a better resurrection.
  • Others suffered various persecution and hardship.

III. Conclusion (vv. 39-40)

  • All these heroes obtained a good report through faith, but they did not receive the full promise.
  • God has provided something better for us, so that we and they can be made perfect together.
