Ruckman Family to Hold Reunion
The Ruckman family will hold a reunion at the home of James Henkle Ruckman on Sunday, July 3, 1932, at the old homestead near Millpoint. The family is tracing its descent from Samuel Ruckman, who was born in England in 1843 and lived for a while in Wales before emigrating to Long Island, New York, in 1782. His son, Thomas, was born on Long Island the same year. The next link in the family chain is James, son of Thomas, who was born in New Jersey in 1716. Then comes David, son of James, who was born in New Jersey in 1747.
This David Ruckman was the ancestor of the Ruckmans in Highland and Pocahontas counties, Virginia. He arrived in what is now southeastern Highland County around 1784 and settled in Back Creek Valley, near Hethel Church and the Mill Gap post office. His wife was Susanna Little, who came to Pocahontas County with their son, David, one hundred years ago. She died around 1845.
