Dunmore

The image you sent is a black and white photo of a piece of paper with handwritten text. The text is a history of Duore Community, written by Ella Pritchard in 1927.

The history begins by describing how Lieutenant Warwick of England surveyed and bought a large tract of land east of the Greenbrier River in the mid-1700s. This land included all of the land now owned by the Moore, Pritchard, McLaughlin, and many other families.

Lieutenant Warwick married Elizabeth Dunlap and they made their home at Dunmore. Warwick returned to England, leaving his wife and young son Jacob behind. He died on this trip, and his widow later married Robert Sitlington of Bath County. They made their home at Dunmore until Jacob Warwick was 21 years old. Jacob Warwick's mother had secured a deed for him covering all of the land owned by his father.

The history goes on to describe how the Warwick property descended to Jacob Warwick's grandsons Jacob and Anirer. Jacob Asthers owned the S.N. Moore property.

The history also mentions that a fort was built in the late 17th century near where the post office now stands, for the protection of pioneer settlers against Indian raids. A covered walk was built from the fort to the creek so that they could safely get water.
