Frost, West Virginia is an unincorporated community in eastern Pocahontas County, West Virginia, United States. It is also home to Mountain Quest Institute. The highly elevated townsite experiences frequent frost conditions, hence the name.
The first settlers in the Frost area were Thomas and Frances Dever, who arrived in 1819. They built a log cabin on the banks of Knapp's Creek. Other early settlers included the Gibson, Hannah, and Wade families.
A post office was established at Frost in 1853. The first postmaster was Francis Dever. The post office was discontinued in 1907, but was re-established in 1919.
Frost was a small farming community in the early years. However, the discovery of coal in the area in the late 1800s led to a period of growth. A number of coal mines were opened in the Frost area, and the population of the community grew.
