Pocahontas County Landfill Warning: Public Health & Environmental Issues 

 

Last night, Savannah Lambert  attended the Pocahontas County Solid Waste Authority meeting, and what came to light regarding our local landfill is deeply concerning.

 

Board member Nancy Harris passed out photos documenting severe issues at the site. The pictures show trash from the landfill blowing directly onto the property of a neighboring resident, Mr. Dilley. Even worse, the photos reveal a massive, completely exposed mound of trash visible from the property line. No dirt. No tarps. Completely uncovered. The bright orange litter fence meant to stop blowing trash was laying broken on the ground.

 

When confronted, the Landfill Manager openly admitted to the room that they do not cover the trash with dirt on weekends, and that the tarps "don't always get put on." He also tried to blame some of the issues on bears.

 

Why This Matters & Why It Is A Violation:

 

The Daily Cover Rule: By West Virginia state law, landfills are required to cover trash with 6 inches of dirt (or approved heavy tarps) at the end of every single operating day. Leaving it wide open all weekend violates environmental safety rules.

 

The Bear Excuse Defeats Itself: Landfills are legally required to use daily cover specifically to deter wildlife and disease-carrying pests. Blaming bears just proves that leaving the trash uncovered is actively attracting wildlife and creating a safety hazard.

 

Property Rights: Neighbors like Mr. Dilley shouldn't have their private property ruined by blowing litter and unmaintained containment fences.

 

Where is the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) ??????

 

Our community deserves proper environmental management and accountability.
