Create a Lesson Plan for the following:

WVDE content standards and objectives for 7th grade math:

"Number and Operations "

"Apply and extend previous understanding of operations with rational numbers to add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit integers."

Lesson Plan

Subject: Mathematics

Grade Level: 7th

Topic: Number and Operations

WVDE Content Standards and Objectives:

  • Apply and extend previous understanding of operations with rational numbers to add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit integers.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit integers using various strategies.
  • Students will be able to apply properties of operations to simplify expressions involving multi-digit integers.
  • Students will be able to estimate the results of operations with multi-digit integers and assess the reasonableness of their answers.

Materials:

  • Whiteboard or flipchart
  • Markers or pens
  • Handouts with practice problems
  • Calculators (optional)

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes)
  • Begin by reviewing the concept of integers.
  • Discuss the different ways to represent integers, such as standard form, expanded form, and word form.
  • Briefly review the basic operations with integers: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  1. Addition and Subtraction of Multi-Digit Integers (15 minutes)
  • Demonstrate how to add and subtract multi-digit integers using the traditional algorithm.
  • Emphasize the importance of lining up the numbers by their place values.
  • Provide students with practice problems involving addition and subtraction of multi-digit integers.
  • Allow students to work in pairs or small groups to solve the problems.
  1. Multiplication of Multi-Digit Integers (15 minutes)
  • Introduce the standard algorithm for multiplying multi-digit integers.
  • Break down the multiplication process into smaller steps, such as partial products and regrouping.
  • Provide students with practice problems involving multiplication of multi-digit integers.
  • Encourage students to use calculators to check their answers.
  1. Division of Multi-Digit Integers (15 minutes)
  • Introduce the standard algorithm for dividing multi-digit integers.
  • Explain the concepts of divisor, quotient, and remainder.
  • Provide students with practice problems involving division of multi-digit integers.
  • Encourage students to use calculators to check their answers.
  1. Application and Estimation (10 minutes)
  • Present real-world problems that involve operations with multi-digit integers.
  • Ask students to solve the problems and explain their reasoning.
  • Discuss the importance of estimation in checking the reasonableness of answers.
  • Provide students with practice problems that require estimating the results of operations with multi-digit integers.
  1. Closure (5 minutes)
  • Summarize the key points of the lesson.
  • Review the different strategies for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing multi-digit integers.
  • Encourage students to continue practicing these operations outside of class.

Assessment:

  • Observe students' work during the lesson to assess their understanding of the concepts.
  • Collect and review students' practice problems to assess their accuracy and problem-solving skills.
  • Give students a short quiz or exit ticket to assess their overall understanding of the lesson objectives.

Differentiation:

  • For students who are struggling with the concepts, provide additional practice problems and support.
  • For students who are already proficient with the concepts, provide more challenging problems and opportunities for enrichment.
