The Galilean sun was warm, casting long shadows across the dusty courtyard where Jesus was speaking. His voice, calm and steady, held the attention of the adults who had gathered, but the sound of children's laughter began to bubble up from the edge of the crowd. A small group of them, chasing a stray dog, tumbled near the circle of listeners.

Immediately, some of the disciples moved to intervene. "Hush now," one of them whispered sternly, holding up a hand to block them. "The Master is teaching. Go and play elsewhere." The children's faces fell, their joyful energy instantly deflated by the rebuke.

Jesus paused, his eyes finding the small, downcast figures. A gentle smile touched his lips. "Let the little children come to me," he said, his voice carrying over the heads of the crowd. "Do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

The disciples looked surprised but stepped aside. Hesitantly at first, and then with a rush of excitement, the children ran forward. Jesus knelt, opening his arms to welcome them. He lifted a small girl with tangled hair onto his knee and listened intently as a young boy told him about a bird with a broken wing he had found.

He didn't offer a complex sermon or a grand miracle. Instead, he gave them his complete attention, his touch a simple blessing. He looked at the faces of the adults watching and said, "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." In that moment, surrounded by their innocent trust, he showed everyone what truly mattered.
