Local happenings in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, as reported in The Pocahontas Times from 1888, include:

Business & Economy

  • The Hotel Pocahontas was sold by J.W. Milligan and J.O. Lowry to Geo. W. Wagner, and the Huntersville Hotel was sold by Jno. R. Slaven to Jan. H. Doyle.
  • J.B. Canfield, former editor of The Pocahontas Times, is leaving the area. Canfield is also collecting debts, and after December 17th all accounts will be placed in the hands of Atty. L.M. McClintic for collection.
  • A.P. Leist is a dealer in leather, harness, and saddles in Ronceverte, and is looking to buy dressed deer skins, hides, and tallow for cash or exchange.
  • Jacob Boner is selling goods for 25 percent cheaper than any other store in the county, and will exchange goods for produce.
  • There is a notice for a Commissioner's Sale of Land, where 100 acres on the waters of Clover Creek will be sold at public auction on January 1, 1888.
  • There are also notices to creditors for the estates of Allen D. Grinns and John Sharp.

Community & Social Events

  • Rev. J.L. Henderson will be preaching at Huntersville, Mt. Pleasant, Sunset, and Bethel.
  • H.M. Lockridge, Esq. was in town after a protracted illness.
  • Dick Mayes, Esq., of Spirit Rock, passed through Huntersville with five deer he killed in the Elk neighborhood.
  • The students of Hillsboro Male and Female Academy will host an entertainment on December 21st.
  • The girls of the Hillsboro Training School will also give an entertainment on Christmas Eve.
  • Mr. L.M. McClintic and Miss Allie Slaven were married at the Huntersville Hotel on December 5th.
  • Miss Lena McGlaughlin is teaching a flourishing school at Lonely.
  • The Douthard's Creek Debating Society held a debate on whether war is a greater evil than intemperance.
  • There are multiple notices for fiduciary accounts to be settled, and commissioner's sales of land.

Health & Well-being

  • Rev. H.W. Kinder is recovering from an illness.
  • Mr. Sherman Kincaid is recovering from an illness.
  • Miss Belle Eskridge and Holt are on the sick list.
  • Miss Bertha Sharp has been on the sick list for some time.
  • Simmons Liver Regulator is advertised as a remedy for a variety of ailments.

Other Items

  • There are various and conflicting reports about the disappearance of Nelson Moore. Some believe he has left to avoid trial, while others suspect he has been killed.
  • A railroad is being located from White Sulphur to Anthony's Creek toward Huntersville.
  • The Pocahontas Times office has official blanks for Justices of the Peace available for purchase.
  • The Pocahontas Times also has letter heads, envelopes, business cards, posters, and other items.
  • The newspaper included a synopsis of the President's recent message to Congress.
  • There are multiple school reports, including one from Mill Point School and Harper School.
