Brandy Hollow, near Huntersville, Pocahontas County, West Virginia, on April 18, 1865.

The sources provide two conflicting accounts of the location of the last battle of the Civil War:

  • Brandy Hollow, near Huntersville, Pocahontas County, West Virginia, on April 18, 1865. This engagement, described in Chapter 15 of the source material, occurred between the Eighth Ohio Cavalry and a portion of General W.L. Jackson's army who were returning home after the surrender at Appomattox.

  • Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, on April 9, 1865. While the sources do not explicitly state that this was the location of the last battle, they do note that it was the place where General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant, effectively ending the war. The sources also mention that Colonel Thomas M. Harris, leader of the Tenth West Virginia Infantry, and his command fired the last shot at Appomattox.

Without further information, it is difficult to determine definitively which of these locations hosted the last battle of the Civil War.
