Lesson Plan: Map Reading

Objective

  • Students will be able to identify and interpret the various components of a map, including the compass rose, symbols, and the map key.

Materials

  • Maps of different types (e.g., topographic, city, state, world)
  • Compasses
  • GPS units
  • Field journals
  • Compass wheel
  • Colored paper
  • Tape
  • Note cards
  • Globe

Lesson Activities

Part 1: Understanding Directions

  1. Introduction
    • Discuss the importance of understanding directions and using maps for navigation.
  2. Cardinal Directions
    • Teach students the cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) using mnemonic devices.
  3. Compass
    • Explain the function of a compass and how to use it to determine directions.
  4. Outdoor Activity
    • Have students use objects to mark the cardinal directions in the outdoor area.

Part 2: Using Maps

  1. Introduction to Maps
    • Demonstrate different types of maps, such as topographic, city, or state maps.
  2. GPS Unit Activity
    • Pair students and provide each pair with a GPS unit.
    • Instruct students to record readings in their field journals while walking from south to north and east to west in the schoolyard.
  3. Mapping the Schoolyard
    • Guide students in creating a large schoolyard map with objects placed at specific locations.
    • Use the GPS unit to test the precision of the objects placed on the map.
  4. Indoor Activity
    • Have students find and mark directions in the classroom using compasses.

Assessment

  • Observe students' participation and understanding during outdoor and indoor activities.
  • Review students' field journals for accurate recordings of directions and map-related information.
