The West Virginia Math Matters initiative

The West Virginia Math Matters initiative is a statewide effort to improve student mathematics performance. It is led by the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) and is designed to create a system of mathematical improvement from the state level to the district level to the school level and, ultimately, to the student level.

The initiative is based on the following principles:

  • All students can learn mathematics.
  • Mathematics instruction should be rigorous and engaging.
  • Mathematics instruction should be aligned with state and national standards.
  • Mathematics teachers should be highly qualified and well-supported.

The West Virginia Math Matters initiative includes a variety of components, such as:

  • Professional development for teachers: The WVDE provides professional development opportunities for teachers to learn about best practices in mathematics instruction.
  • Curriculum and instructional materials: The WVDE provides schools with access to high-quality curriculum and instructional materials that are aligned with state and national standards.
  • Assessment: The WVDE uses a variety of assessments to measure student progress in mathematics.
  • Support for families and communities: The WVDE provides resources and support for families and communities to help them engage their children in mathematics learning.

The West Virginia Math Matters initiative was launched in 2017 and has shown promising results. In 2019, West Virginia students made significant gains on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in mathematics.

The initiative is still in its early stages, but it has the potential to make a real difference in the lives of West Virginia students. By ensuring that all students have access to high-quality mathematics instruction, the West Virginia Math Matters initiative can help students develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills they need to succeed in school and in life.
