The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as The Nation's Report Card, is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what America's students know and can do in various subject areas. NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Evaluation and Regional Assistance (NCES), which is part of the U.S. Department of Education.

NAEP in mathematics is administered to students in grades 4, 8, and 12. The assessment measures students' knowledge and skills in a variety of mathematical areas, such as number and operations, algebra, geometry, data analysis, and statistics.

NAEP results are reported on a scale of 0 to 500, with a higher score indicating better performance. The average NAEP mathematics score for fourth-grade students in the United States was 241 in 2022, the average score for eighth-grade students was 279, and the average score for twelfth-grade students was 277.

Pocahontas County, West Virginia, is a rural county with a population of about 8,500 people. The county has one public school district, which serves approximately 2,000 students.

In 2022, the average NAEP mathematics score for fourth-grade students in Pocahontas County was 224, the average score for eighth-grade students was 269, and the average score for twelfth-grade students was 267. These scores are all below the national average.
