1950

  • July 29th: Constable Frank Young held a public auction at the Harris Grocery store in Marlinton. Items for sale included a Philco Console Radio, Maytag washing machine, and various furniture.

1952

  • February 12th: William Calvin Slaven of Cass, Marvin Hedrick of Bartow, Layke Vandevener of Arbovale, Russell Glen Cook of Beard, and Harry Winters Jordan of Hillsboro were registered from Local Board No. 16, Pocahontas County and were forwarded to Marlinton to Beckley for induction.
  • October 23rd: Mr. and Mrs. R. Dunbrack visited friends and relatives at Frankford.

  • March 18th: Mrs. Lelia B. Jett, aged 79 years, died in Morgantown. She was survived by three sons and two daughters.
  • March 25th: A Men’s Day program was held at Wilson Chapel in Brownsburg.
  • October 13th: A rattlesnake was found and killed in the Marlinton High School office building. The snake was a female with eight eggs.
  • November 3rd: Raymond Shrader was brought to the Pocahontas Memorial Hospital on Wednesday morning with a gunshot wound in his leg received in a hunting accident on Red Lick Mountain.

1956

  • February (Date Unknown): Private First Class James C. Anderson returned to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina after spending a ten day leave with relatives and friends at Marlinton and Millpoint.
  • February 21st: Elzie Garretson, age 20 years, son of Rev. and Mrs. Estel Garretson of Marlinton, began basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina.
  • February 25th (Delayed): Farnest Ramsey was a patient in the hospital at Charlottesville and was reported to be improving.
  • March (Date Unknown): Mr. and Mrs. T. G. Alderman and family, of Marlinton, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Merritt Kellison on Sunday.
  • March (Date Unknown): Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey E. Ferguson spent the week in Atlantic City and Philadelphia.
  • March (Date Unknown): First Class Kermit D. Akers, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Akers, of Second Avenue, Marlinton, landed on Iwo Jima with the 3rd Marine Division after a nine-month operation.
  • May 3rd: Rev. Estil Garretson, aged 48 years, of Marlinton, died on Tuesday night.
  • May 15th: Jack Ward, aged 24 years, of Greenville, Tennessee was instantly killed in an automobile accident.
  • May 18th: Mrs. Edna Brown Slayton, aged 56 years, wife of Delbert Slayton, died at her home in Durbin.
  • May 22nd: A good Marlin ton hunter got a box of shotgun shells at a self service store. He went hunting next morning in Buckley Mountain. He shot at squirrels. A wild turkey passed by him.
  • May 25th: An organization meeting for the Marlinton Country Club was held in the directors room of the Bank of Marlinton at 7:30 o’clock.
  • May 26th: Beaver Creek Cemetery was cleaned.
  • June 2nd: Mr. and Mrs. _____ Dunbrack and son, Raymond Shrader, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Roy Simmons at their home in Greenbank.
  • June 16th: Mary Jane, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Vandevender, and Ronald, son of Mr. and Mrs. Linwood Presley were married.
  • June (Date Unknown): An auction was held by Sam Harper.
  • August 13th: Delaney Shirkey and his wife, of Marlinton, had a son, named Leslie Eugene.
  • August 15th: Grady Mullens and his wife, of Huntersville, had a daughter.

  • August 16th: Governor Morgan received a letter from Tiny McCoy requesting that his sentence to life imprisonment be commuted to 2 weeks.

  • December 29th: A dance was held at the McNeil Gym in Hillsboro. Music by Bur Shaffer’s Orchestra. Sponsored by Hillsboro Band Boosters Club.

1957

  • January (Date Unknown): Mrs. Harry Cochran, of Elkins, visited relatives and friends in Marlinton last week.

1958

  • February 13th: Charles C. Clendenen, aged 61 years, died at his home in Marlinton.
  • February (Date Unknown): A fire practically destroyed the building and stock of the American Legion Hall and the Davidson building, owned by Basil Price Sharp, on the corner of Eighth Street and Fourth Avenue.
  • March 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th: Revival was held at Slaty Fork Church.
  • March (Date Unknown): Airman First Class James C. Anderson returned to his base after spending ten days of leave with family and friends in Marlinton and Millpoint. He received the Marksmanship Medal at Parris Island, South Carolina and would begin specialized schooling.
