Mill Point, West Virginia, is an unincorporated community located in Pocahontas County. It is situated at the junction of U.S. Route 219 and state routes 39 and 55, approximately 2.5 miles northeast of Hillsboro. The community's name derives from the presence of several mills in the area during its early settlement.
The history of Mill Point dates back to the mid-18th century when European settlers began to explore and colonize the region. In 1750, a pioneer settler named Stephen Sewell camped in the area that would later become Mill Point. In 1774, a stockade known as Fort Day was erected in Mill Point during the French and Indian War.
In 1778, two brothers, James and John Bridger, were killed in Indian raids near Mill Point. These tragic events highlight the dangers faced by early settlers in the region.
Mill Point gained prominence in the 19th century with the establishment of several mills along Stamping Creek. These mills played a vital role in the local economy, processing grains and lumber for the surrounding communities. One notable mill, the McNeel Mill, was constructed in 1868 and operated until 1947. The mill's three-story wooden frame structure and 21-foot-diameter metal mill wheel stand as a testament to the area's industrial heritage.
In addition to its mills, Mill Point also became known for its contributions to technological advancements. In the mid-19th century, James E.A. Gibbs, a resident of Mill Point, invented the chain stitch sewing machine, a significant innovation in the textile industry.
